You definitely do not need to pay full price just to filter out the bad options. I usually use carfaxforsale because they pull data from the same official sources like NMVTIS and insurance records but it only costs three bucks. It gives you the ownership history and accident checks which is enough to spot a lemon. It saves a lot of money when you are looking at five or six different cars and need to verify the mileage quickly.

Three dollars is much more reasonable than what the dealers are charging. I will grab the VINs and run them through there before I go for a test drive.
