I often wonder how Sweden would be had we not been forced to convert to Christianity. I do think the reason for us being the way we are, a nation more liberal than most is because we had the Asatru for as long as we did and also converted to Christianity so late. People stuck with the old ways of celebrating things and the old way of life even centuries after we were converted. I would say it's still in our backbone subconciously.

I'd seriously love to live in Sweden or Norway. Or anywhere in Scandinavia. Seems like such laid back places to live.

I read somewhere that Sweden is 50% Christian 50% Asatru. How true is that?

That's very interesting!

It is very laid back. At least I think so. We rarely get offended and we don't have censorship. We also have a very open and liberal view on sexuality and sex, nakedness etc in general.

About the percentage thing? Hmm I have no clue. I mean you don't really hear of many people actually practicing Asatru, only minority sub-cultures. The belief in folklore though is pretty high in percentage. I think 90% of the Swedish population are members of the Swedish National Church (which is a Lutheran church), but out of those 90% I would say only 10% are actually religious people and practice some sort of Christian faith. The rest are just members because they were baptized when they were kids (since it's a tradition to do so). More and more people are officially taking back their membership and leaving the church each year - I did so this past fall (not that I ever went, but I was still a member since I was a baby) - felt so good!

I think the Asatru values are still in all of us whether we're actually aware of it or not. Alot of our holidays are still Pagan/Norse, and the Christian holidays we celebrate have more Norse influences than Biblical.

As for the holiday thing. I think that's why I get a bit moody/stroppy around times like Yule. I know I shouldn't..but there's just this part of me that just gets tense.
