As I walking through in the Old Forest,
Singing a happy tune,
I saw a little old man
Blocking the road,
Dressed in blue and yellow.
'Hoe there fair maiden,
Dark and tall,
Where are you going,
And why in such a hurry?
Do you care to dine with
Bombadil and his lady,
Over roast beef and lemonade?
I told him I could not,
For I was supposed to
Meet my firend Strider in Bree
At a quater till 3.
But he'd pester me,
This silly old man,
Dressed in his silly blue and yellow,
And oversized boots.
"Allright, I'll go,
but if I'm late,
I'll have your skin!"
He did a great leap
And promised I wouldn't be late
For me date.
Then he took his hand in mine,
And we danced from the road to his hill,
Over grassy knolls
And forgotten fields,
Singing silly songs
And getting louder with each step,
Having a merry ol' time.
Then his house came in view,
And I was sad,
For I was having a gay ol' time,
And I didn't want it to end.
"Oh my sweet Goldberry,"
He yodeled as we neared the front door,
"I've brought a guest,
A rangeress from the North,
To dine and dance with us!
Prepare the lemonade,
Cut some cheese,
And reheat the roast beef.
Set out the dishes and spoons,
Put on a clean, best gown,
And mop up the water in the kitchen,
We don't want our guest to fall
And bump her sweet, little brown head.
We entered the house,
Found it fresh and clean,
With 3 silver bowls on the table,
filled to the brim with steaming roast beef,
a smallplate of cheese sat in the middle,
and accompianed by a pitcher of lemonade.
And at the head of the table,
Dressed in gold and white,
Sat Miss GoldBerry,
Tom Bombadill's sweet lady.
"Welcome guest and sit,"
She said smiling warmly at me,
"And I believe we shall eat.
We ate till our bellies were full
And then let the dishes set
As we danced upon the knoll.
I was having a great time,
I didn't want it to end,
But then I heard a clock go off in my head:
Its after three it said.
I was supposed to meet Strider half an hour ago!
So I ran to Bree,
Shouting my thanks to Tom and his lady,
And I ran as if I had wings,
Through the Old Forest,
Over stump and creek,
Over limbs and insects that went breek-a-breek.
I prayed Strider wouldn't be mad at me
For being late.
Leaning on the stone wall,
I found my firend,
Smoking a pipe and dressed in green.
"I'm sorry if I'm late,
I was spending the afternoon with Bombadil
And his fair lady, Goldberry,
And I got so caught up in the fun,
I forgot to meet you at a quater till 3.
He said nothing,
But offered me his arm,
And we walked away
Into the sunset,
To spend the night under the stars,
But I thought I saw,
In his eyes,
A hint of jealousy
Of my fun afternoon,
With old Bombadil.
