5. YOU MUST let your character die sometimes. (You can’t always be “Invincible” but you still can get hurt.)

Jarlaxle stood quietly watching as some drows talked in the hall, the mathriarch never seemed too happy, but who could blame her? She was in lead of a house and in what a fragile place the houses sefety might be, if they would fail in their plan.

They were red spiders, and a tiny ones at that. They crawled over bare ebony arms, down muscled torsos, finding the tenderest spots to place their stinging bites. Twelve young drow warriors sat on the nondescript stone floor in one of Melee-Magthere's training rooms. There had been fifteen to begin with. Three had already been sent home in disgrace.

Drizzt Do'Urden sensed the tiny arachnid legs tickling up his left leg. Another proceeded down his forhead. He closed his eyes, sinking into meditation, in stark apprehension of what he knew would be coming -

The student in front of him yelped and stood, swatting the offending spider to the floor. Two swollen bites, oozing green pus, bulged on his cheek. Recovering from his initial pain, the drow caught the ire of the masters and knew well the implications.

"I couldn't help it," he protested. "It won't happen again!"

The lead master, a warrior of House Baenre, lifted a feathery white eyebrow. "Extend your sword arm," he commanded softly, lethally.

Grimacing, the student held out his right arm. A fine edged blade gleamed through the air and sliced cleanly through the young drow's wrist.

"You are excused from Melee-Magthere," the Baenre master said coldly, sheathing his sword.

Half sobbing and clutching the morbid stump that had been his sword hand, the disgraced student rushed from the room.

Drizzt, who had watched the display, closed his eyes against the horror. One of the spiders crawled down his torso, towards his groin.

He must stay calm.

The spider skittered a moment, finding the most favorable position.

He must stay calm.

The spider stopped.

He must... stay...

The bite was like flame. Burning brands seemed to erupt, spreading from the bite to all parts of his body. His mind exploded in brilliant flares of pain. He bit down hard on his lower lip and tasted blood. Heart pounding, blood hammering in his ears, he willed his racing pulse to calm.

He didn't flinch, even when the second spider scurried to rest on his neck.
