YEAH! I never ever thought of it like that, and it does make sense :)

But, I do think he is respectable. He is, as LIzzy says, a gentlemen, and he does act in a respectable manner to people outside the family circle, he just lacks some respect for his wife and younger children because they do act in a very ridiculous manner.
Sme of the things he says and does are very funny though, and he is a really good character, i like it when he tells LIzzy that if she marries Mr Collins he'll never speak to her again because it shows that he does care for her, as well as being really funny because it provokes Mrs Bennet

He is gentlemanly enough to people outside his family, but not to his family, and in my opinion that does not make him respectable. But he sure does make a good literary device, doesn't he? :P

I love your icon, btw :D

Yeah I thought that was cool too, even though I'd never heard of him before. Apparently he's famous :P

So you read AustenBlog as well? I'm addicted. :) for those of you who don't know, its www.austenblog.com

Today I was at the library and found Sanditon, which Jane never finished, and some other author finished the book later and published it... it shall be interesting to read, but first I have to finish Northanger Abbey.

i;ve been to that, i got my name thing and then got to scared to post. they all know so much compared to me...

I wish my library had good books like sandition - they don't even have pride and prejudice most of the time. I really want to read the letters as well, in a strange, nosy sort of way...

I finished Northangar Abbe the other day, i really liked it, it was really cool with the parodies of Gothic horror, I thought it was a really good read.

Yes, Northanger Abbey is the most lighthearted of all her books, IMHO.

You might try Pemberley again. :) We're really very friendly.

I'm reading Northanger Abbey for the first time, and came across this quote from Chapter 10 yesterday:

Quote:
Woman is fine for her own satisfaction alone. No man will admire her more, no woman will like her better for it. Neatness and fashion are enough for the former, and a something of shabbiness or impropriety will be most endearing to the latter. --But none of these grave reflections troubled the tranquillity of Catherine.

A fine example of the wisdom, insight, and truth of Jane Austen.

I'm jumping in the post. :p
Jane Austen is such a literary genius. The best conversationlist of her time, and one of the best of all time. The fact that she is a woman is just outstanding and is so contributing to the women's rights movement. She would fit Mr.Darcy's description of a ' truly accomplished woman'.

I received all her books for Christmas and have so far read Pride and Prejudice (first reading) and Emma. I am currently reading Persuasion, which I have never read before. I have also read in the past Sense and Sensibility so I'm looking forward to once again enter the world of the Dashowood family. I think Emma is my favourite so far. I just love her character and Mr. Knightly of course. ;)

^^ I've never read any of her books, except for kid versions along time ago. Though coming from a family with seven girls, I have seen quite a few of the movies they have made. ;)

I've read P&P (probably my favourite book of all time), Sense and Sensibility and Persuasion.

I found S&S a bit dull and sometimes even extremely hard to get through... And the thing I disliked the most was when Elinor and Edward finally got each other, they 'were not so much in love to consider 500 a year enough comfort'... it's not qiote like that, but something like it.. I mean, come on, all these many pages, and then they're not even head over heals!

I completely loved Persuasion! Anne is such a lovely character.
