Knyn nodded his thanks at Rumour, Turwathiel, and the Black Robe. To Aver, he said quietly, "Because you are too far into this already. You know of the Dragonstone. The Death Lord will hunt you down." When he turned back to the priestess, Ildera was gone.

"They're the ones!" came a sudden shout behind them.

Knyn spun around, greatsword in hand. Quickly fanning out to surround them were a score of mounted cavalry arrayed in silver armor. Their breastplates all bore the insignia of the Realm. The captain rode up to them. "We've received a tipoff that you were the ones who brought the unholy visitors," he said evenly.

Without warning he stabbed forward, catching the captain on the breastplate. Off balance, the captain staggered back, buying Knyn the time he needed to swing up onto his horse.
