I'm sure a lot of people have read this book.....I had to read Lord of the Flies for summer homework this year. I thought it was pretty good, but also rather gruesome. But it was interesting. What does everyone else think?

I definitely thought it was interesting...it was creepy in some parts but very thought-provoking. It made me wonder what would really happen if a bunch of boys were stuck on an island together. Would something similar to what happened in the book occur?

Deep in the mists of time, I had to read Lord of the Flies for my English Literature 'O' level (yes, I am that old). I found the book fascinating - although very dark in places.

But then they changed the syllabus halfway through the second year and made us read Cider with Rosie instead (yawn  ). I never read that book so I failed the exam. (not that it mattered because I passed English Language - the one that counted)

Believe me - If I was given the choice now I would definitely go for Lord of the Flies over Cider With Rosie.

i've read it. i liked it i guess. it's got a lot of though provoking ideas, like the true nature of human beings when they've lost all morals. it's a book i would only read once, however!

It has a good point, but it could be made in a more entertaining way. It's kindof obvious what's going to happen, though. They're little boys! Really...

I read it last year. We studied Freudian psychology while reading the book. It was kinda interesting with our teacher. Amazing that those little boys could be so destructive. Poor Piggy. :'(

I read it last year for school, too. It was ok, I guess. I found the message behind it interesting, but I wouldn't put it on my list of favorites.

I just finished reading it in class and really liked it. Poor Simon. *Looks down at sig* I rather enjoyed the gory parts...

"There isn't anyone to help you. Only me. And I'm the Beast."
Simon's mouth labored, brought forth audible words.
"Pig's head on a stick."
"Fancy thinking the Beast was something you could hunt and kill!" said
the head. For a moment or two the forest and all the other dimly appreciated
places echoed with the parody of laughter. "You knew, didn't you? I'm part
of you? Close, close, close! I'm the reason why it's no go? Why things are
what they are?"
The laughter shivered again.
"Come now," said the Lord of the Flies. "Get back to the others and
we'll forget the whole thing."
Simon's head wobbled. His eyes were half closed as though he were
imitating the obscene thing on the stick. He knew that one of his times was
coming on. The Lord of the Flies was expanding like a balloon.
"This is ridiculous. You know perfectly well you'll only meet me down
there-so don't try to escape!"
Simon's body was arched and stiff. The Lord of the Flies spoke in the
voice of a schoolmaster.
"This has gone quite far enough. My poor, misguided child, do you think
you know better than I do?"
There was a pause.
"I'm warning you. I'm going to get angry. D'you see? You're not wanted.
Understand? We are going to have fun on this island. Understand? We are
going to have fun on this island! So don't try it on, my poor misguided boy,
or else-"
Simon found he was looking into a vast mouth. There was blackness
within, a blackness that spread.
"-Or else," said the Lord of the Flies, "we shall do you. See? Jack and
Roger and Maurice and Robert and Bill and Piggy and Ralph. Do you. See?"

Luckily I didn't have to read it over the summer, but I did have to read it for a book report last year. Did you know he came up with the idea for it while sitting by the fire with his wife? Everyone's asking him about symbolism and stuff and he's like "i don't know. what ever you want it to be. i just thought it would be a neat idea..." (not in those words obviously) and we watched the movie which was hilarious!

I read it on my own. I liked it, in a different kind of way. It was interesting, kept me reading, ya know. It creeped me out a little in places. Except the person who wrote the foreward to it gave away all the big surprises! Made me mad! lol Hey DamsonRhee, was the movie funny on purpose, or so bad it's funny?

The underlying psychology was interesting. For some reason, we seem to connect the main idea from this to books we're reading at the moment.

"Kill the talking tortus that doesn't want to have any fun... Spill his blood!
