lol when I read some of threads here where some of the younger members of AU have posted it really does make me feel like a senior citizen.. like I'm from a different century or something.

I turned 18 the same year as one of the main parliament/government elections here in Sweden so I got to experience "adult-hood" right away sort of. That felt really special, voting for the first time.

I also felt so proud when I could buy my own liquor at the liquor store, haha.

This hilarious genius Swedish comedian once said that "A sign of getting really old is when they no longer ask for ID at the liquor store but if you need help carrying the bags instead"

You know, for my 21st birthday I didn't hit the bars or anything, but I did order a glass of wine at Applebees for my birthday dinner, holding up my ID as I ordered it very proudly! :D

Welcome to the club, Órelindë

lol Ivy, my brother did the same thing on his 21st ...at Joe's crab shack though. :p I went to the dinner theatre for my 21st and opted for non alcoholic champagne to celebrate with the family. It was a great night, we saw "The King and I" from the front row...such amazing actors and sets/costumes!

Forgive the double posting...bumps this back from page 4...

So, all you "of age" people, creatures, beings.... How did you feel when reading LotR, or watching the movies, to know that in various races we'd still be considered young people, pre-teens, or even children in some cultures? I mean I'd have to be hundreds of years old as an elf, in my 30's as a hobbit to be a "teen" and so on....what're your thoughts?

It's 18 to drink here so guess what I did on my 18th birthday? Haha. Let's just say I needed help getting home/stand up

tindomerel, I'd never even thought about that but it's really weird when you think about it how in our world we've lived about 25% of our lives and yet we'd have thousands of years to go had we been born Elves. I would definitely like to be able to choose for myself how long I wanted to live, so if I wanted to live to see another 500 years I would have that option, you know

I know and I agree Child of Óðinn, I mean can you imagine living at home and being a "child" til you were in your thirties like a hobbit? I wonder if elf children get tired of being the young ones after a hundred years? ..lol.. but really it's a strange but cool thing to think about...I mean we think we have it tough at times waiting to turn 18 or 21! :)

Interesting idea. I suppose elves and hobbits mature at a different rate so they're not wanting to move out be the time they're 18. I'm not sure about elves but with hobbits it doesn't seem to be quite the same as it is for us. I mean Pippin was still under age but even if he seems yunger he seems to have the same amount of rights as the others. At the end of the book you don't see his parents being furious with him for going off on an epic journey to Mount Doom without telling them :P

In some ways being a hobbit or even better, an elf does sound pretty good - another few hundred years before you have to start having responsibilities, get a job and so on :P

..bumps this club back from this back page..:bye2:
So, now that you are an official adult in today's society, what's the next thing you are looking forward to? I mean for most people, they look forward to turning 18, 21 and so on...but now that we're there, what's the next highlight in your life of adulthood?

For me, it's going to be having a house of my own I think. I'm in an apt. now which is great and lots more room than some apartments, but I want to have pets again...which I can't really have in my apt...though I do have an outdoor cat now. :) But I honestly look forward to having a home I can paint and decorate, a private yard and all that. I have the full time job now, so it's just a matter of saving some more money. :P

Great question tindomerel!

Unfortunately having next to no money from being a student I have yet to afford moving out of my parents house. It's quite a large house though so I do have privacy there with my own bathroom and even my own entrance but I cannot wait to get my own place. So yes that is definitely the next step I'm looking forward to; afford moving out and get my own apartment and then eventually down the line, my own house!

I've always gotten a kick out of the hobbits "Tweens" idea, and the thought of coming of age at 33 is so funny to think about. It's not as hard to imagine myself being a "tween" since it's more like a teenager, and that's not TOO far back ;) It's more of a stretch to think about being an elf and still in the middle of childhood. Not coming of age until 50 and then being expected to marry right away... woah. Though not required, as we see in Arwen & her brothers.

I think owning a house and having children someday, though who knows when that will be!

lol...of course our grand webmiss, you are always welcome here! :) You're getting old though, ya know? ;) kidding, kidding..

And ummm anyone else have grand discussion ideas? The only adult thing as it were, we've been talking about around home is the silly, ridiculous voting commercials on tv, for various canidates. We've got one guy running...they call him "Taxin' Ted" in the ad, he's voted to raise taxes something like 80 out of 84 times, but the ad is just sad...like 7 year olds out on the playground picking on one another.
:duh:

Yay!! welcome to the club Arwen :D

lol these TV adverts sound wierd tin. I don't think they go in for TV adverts for candidates much in the uk - I think there's certain rules for about kind of thing. They do go in for billboard adverts in the streets though and they're often pretty funny and strange. I definitly remember one for the Labour party which showed the Conservative candidate with Margarate Thatcher's hair.

Mmmm...so I thought I'd bump this up. :)

Mainly because, this is a club for those of VOTING age and for those in the United States, mid term elections are next Tuesday (November 7th) and I figured I'd remind everyone who are registered to vote to get out and VOTE!! And those who aren't registered to vote to get registered (I think you can get registered on the day before elections...though not sure.
:)
Oh, and make sure you make an educated vote and if you don't know where your polling place is, it's not that hard to find out!

I'm SO excited to vote in a very important election! WOOO!!
