Two eyes peered from out of the darkness, picking out the figures one by one. A leaf rusteled and the eyes faded as silently as they had come.

There was the snapping of a twig, and high above on the other side of the clearing from the snap, the eyes peered down from a tree.

Meleth appeared lost in her own thoughts, but the snapping of a twig made her frown and glance up. "Did either of you hear something?" she asked Fearan and Miriel over her shoulder.

The eyes blinked once more and vanished. As they did so small hard stones began to fire into the clearing from it seemed everywhere
