A few moments later two guards appeared and brought them to the kitchens. Miriel heard laughter and talk from the great hall, the silver ring around her neck felt tight and she stared at the ground while walking. She straightened her back for the lash marks burnt under the dark blue fabric of her dress.
The kitchens were even more croweded than usual: Boromir wanted to impress his guests in more than one way.
The first guard turned to the girls and sneered: "The King will be watching you closely tonight. He wants you to know that one step in the wrong way..." he snapped his fingers "You will pay for it.."
Then they both turned and marched out of the kitchen.

The elf pulled gently on her collar, swallowing hard as she contemplated the meaning of their words. Her face showed no fear only careful curiousity.
"I wonder what that was all about..." she said softly, eyes glinting in the dull light.

"Isn't it obvious?" asked Ilythiiri impatiently, scanning the kitchen. "He wants to scare us so we won't try anything. It's not going to work." She looked around helplessly - nobody seemed to have noticed them at all, apart from a few sideways glanced.

"Power.." Miriel added with a smile, "It's all about power.."
She sighed and looked at her friends, awaiting that they would be spotted by someone of the kitchen staff soon.

Ilythiiri didn't wait. She quickly ducked around a corner into a passage leading from the kitchen to the dining hall, out of sight of the people in the kitchen, and pricked up her ears - there were sure to be some interesting conversations taking place at the table.
