I'd like to have a go, even if I can't write poetry to save my life

May I join, too?
Is there a specific topic the poem has to be about? And must there be a rhyme?

They don't need to rhyme, there is no topic, and it can be a poem you already used for something else.

Here is my entry!
Shining rays, with brightness piercing,
How comest thou to be so pure?
Shing gently, yet almost fiercely,
Thou art bold and sure.
I greet thee now,
With wondering brow,
Oh messenger named Light!
I see thee now; as with happy ease
Though dost light the shore.
And then again, the golden sea’s,
As thou hast time and time before.
It seems to be
Thy only enemy
Is darkness and the night.
With timely grace, thou flicker now,
Across the shifting sand.
And I take no though, nor wonder how,
Thou lightest up the land.
From age to age,
From King to sage,
Thou work with all thy might.

Heres my poem its not to good...
Note: Its William Wallaces from Braveheart Piont of view about his wife and her death.
My sweet maiden,
Brown was her hair,
And those-deep piercing brown eyes,
Whenever I looked apon her my heart sang with joy,
Knowing that she was mine,
Knowing she loved me,
Knowing I loved her more then she would know,
Married we were,
In secret it be,
For thee english would take her from me if they knew,
Oh sweet maiden,
Which when my family died gave me a flower,
I have never let it leave me since,
I always have loved her since,
More beuatiful then Rome its self she was,
Even when I found her dead,
Oh what hate,
Hate deeper then the deep relms of hell against thy english men,
For stealing my wifes life away,
This madness drives me on through the day,
Or is it this lost memory of the ones I loved,
I still love...
Oh sweet maiden dont leave me,
dont go...
