I'm not so sure about that Melkor painting.. I don't see him as a 'beast' as such.. more like Sauron-type dark lord with evil dark armour etc.

Yes, but more menacing than Sauron.

I think they are very beautiful paintings, whether or not they are an accurate representation of Tolkien's beings. They are just one artist's possible representation, and we all have different ideas of what the Valar should look like.
I think to be Valar they need to be less humanoid, and more the essence of what their spirit was... Like the Ulmo one. You can see subtle features within the huge wave. But who knows; they could all take on any form they wished, and when seen among Men, they may have appeared much more like Men.
Varda and Yavanna look beautiful, though Varda reminds me more of Melian, and Yavanna reminds me of how I picture Nienor. His Galadriel also reminds me more of Éowyn.
Males often have a very narrow idea of feminine perfection, and if the Valar represent this to some degree, a male is going to depict them as having a large bust, revealing clothing, and a very beautiful face. Not many artists attempt the Valar, so why do we need to be so critical?

Neither do I, but as Undomiel said, they could all take on any form they wished.

Wow, that's an extremely long URL. Anyway, that's your favorite picture? Decent. It's not easy for me to find pictures of those who haven't been in the movies, so this is a nice find.

Everyone is saying they don't see Melkor as the 'beast' that he is depicted as, and I agree. I think he has a more Suaron look.
