just left a post about this in "most recently watched" and decided it's so good it deserves its own topic.
i really believe this film is practically perfect - it's heart-wrenching without being over sentimental or soppy, it deals with major social issues (the miners' strike and prejudice) without being preachy, and it's brilliantly funny in parts.
one of my favourite moments is when the dad crosses the picket line and completely breaks down - it's so beautiful the way he's willing to sacrifice his pride for his son, but it's also incredibly painful to see him reduced to everything he hates. it's a stunning performance from gary lewis and further proof that acting is an art form.
i also love its little unspoken moments - the scene where debbie doesn't even notice that she's dragging her stick across policemen's shields instead of the wall says everything you need to know about the atmosphere they were living in without saying anything at all.
jamie bell is absolutely fantastic - you can see that he has great potential as a dancer, but he doesn't look too polished (his footwork's great but his arms are awkward) so you really do believe he's a raw talent. plus, there's something wonderfully charasmatic about him that makes you want to watch him, and that's something very few actors have. i really want to see some of his other stuff cuz if billy elliot's anything to go by, he should be a fantastic actor.
so come on, let's talk about billy elliot.

*browses through page two on the look for Hidalgo thread and decides to save Billy Elliot from miserably fading into oblivion*
It's been a while since I saw the movie... but I've seen it twice. Great movie.. I like to watch it mainly for the dancing... at times it gets too social-realist.... at least as far as I remember!

This is probably one of the most brilliant movies ever made!
I've seen this movie so many times it's ridiculous. But I love it each time. My favourite part is when he's so angry and he like tries to dance all the dance out of him...or whatever. Just the coolest thing I've ever seen. Wouldn't that just be so cool to see a guy (or anyone for that matter) just dancing like crazy down a street?!
So...wonderful movie in my opinion. Haven't seen it in a while...mmm...*wanders off to go find it at the movie store....*

Yeah... I was browsing almost all 24 pages in this forum to find the Hidalgo thread, but came across everything else but that...
Anyway, I agree on the 'angry dance' - great scene!!
Now you mention it, I gotta admit that's actually how I react sometimes. Especially if I'm sad or the angry-sad kind of mood. I put on some loud music and dance like crazy. Usually something Nightwishy so the steps and moves become sort of ballet-ish with a touch of funk and capoeira... very very mixed and very wierd.... but it works...!

But only one HODINKEE staffer link had a chance to go link hands-on with the piece, and you're reading his article right now. I remember it like it was only two weeks ago, being handed a link small Audemars Piguet leather watch case, unfastening it, and seeing this blue beauty in front of me.
