Kendath shrugged. "I'll be in the archives. I'll call you down in a moment." Without further word, he disappeared into another side corridor.

He walked farther along this one, the air growing warmer and more stifling as he went. Presently he stood at a blank stone wall. He spoke an arcane phrase and executed a few mystical passes. A shimmering blue portal appeared in the stone.

He stepped through it to find himself in a circular chamber illuminated by flaming sconces. The sconces cast cobalt light upon the rune-etched walls and upon an iridescent object that stood on a slender pedestal in the center of the chamber.

The Star Crystal.

Kendath slowly walked around the pedestal, strangely drawn by the Star Crystal's pulsating eldritch power. He closed his eyes and, continuing to walk, recited in his mind all that Evlyn had related.

The destructive potential of the artifact is immense... yet the balance must be maintained... half of life... half of death... It is nothing without its imbuing counterpart, the artifact known as the Cloud Crystal... lost in antiquity... five thousand years... since the first ages of darkness....

His musings were intervened by Demon's voice resounding urgently in his head, Ken! Come quickly to the library. I've found it!

"I was going to visit the Renegade, maybe have some fun with it?"

Hearing this, Merrin frantically strained for the lever she'd been trying to reach - it was just out of her grasp, and her fingertips brushed it agonizingly until...success! She managed to lift it high enough to give herself space to slip under the iron bars and, heart pounding uncomfortably in her chest, took off swiftly down the hall with no idea where she was going, really. She chastised herself, You told him you could 'deal with it'!

The other, honest side of her replied I lied. She raced around a corner trying hard not to make any noise, and halted, now completely confused.

The archives ensconced within the harboring stone of the mountain were the Meilthas' pride and formidable source of information. The library was immense, almost as large as the main cavern itself. Occupying its obsidian shelves were rolls upon rolls of ancient tomes, scrolls from long ages past, spellbooks of unfathomable power...

Among the tall shelves, even a dragon as large as Demon was difficult to find. Nonetheless, Kendath was guided by the wyrm's incessant urgings.

Demon sat upright in the central aisle, his lashing tail curled around his haunches, his infernal snout buried within an old leather-bound tome. "Ken! There you are. Certainly took you long enough. Come look what I dug up from some obscure pile."

"Forgive me," the rider murmured, moving behind his dragon to peer inside the book. The entire page was filled with ancient runes in a dialect even he, educated as he was in magic, couldn't understand. "What is it?"

Appearing smug and quite pleased with himself, Demon elucidated, "A map, you bloody, ignorant human. A map dating to the dark ages. A map to the Cloud Crystal."

Evlyn heard footsteps comeing down the corridor towards her and withdrew into the shadows, the Renagade ran past her and she lept out behind, grabbing around the neck, ignoreing the sharp pain in her arm.

Merrin tumbled awkwardly to the floor and rolled away from Evlyn's grasp, gasping for air. She sprang to her feet, feeling disgusted with herself. You couldn't even run the right direction, could you, Merrin?

Enlyn had been knocked over by the girl and as she got up she yelled frantically Jemx the renagades escaped help me but he was asleep, she thought towards Kendreth The renagads escaped but as he was in the libary he might not hear it.

Merrin hesitated, seeing Evlyn still on the ground. Some strange notion of helping her up seemed to float momentarily through her mind, but she hurriedly dismissed it.

Merrin turned tail and sprinted down the passage, with no real idea of where she was going. Where's the door - the door - though it's not as if I can open it...

Evlyn took off after her, slowly gaining, luckily the girl was running towards a dead end.

Merrin skidded to a halt, confronted with a wall. To the right and left there were walls as well - horrified, she whirled around, but it was too late to switch direction and for the second time that day she found herself facing an armed Meiltha with no weapon readily to hand, and this time not even her dragon behind her.

"This is the ironic part," Demon continued wryly. "The Star Crystal lies high in the Mountains of Ash. It is protected by a guardian. And do you know who can defeat that guardian?"

"I have no idea," came Kendath's equally dry response, for he knew his dragon well enough to conclude that Demon was thoroughly enjoying the superiority.

Demon paused for dramatic effect. "Why, one pure of heart and soul. I don't believe either we or Evlyn qualify."

He heard a sharp intake of breath from his rider. "Merrin."

Then, even more ironically, came the faint but still distinct telepathic cry, The renagads escaped

Meanwhile Kalma had been busy and entered the cave, he transformed himself into a human and sneaked further to find out what was going on. Should he be able to find out what both sides were doing then he could easily find and opening to strike at either sides or perhaps gain something from them.
