true, also that was tolkiens idea, and it fits better because it describes the whole book.

I don't know how to vote for this...my opinions are too flung out. The War of the Ring I think would have been a good title, because the War of the Ring really was the last battle for Middle Earth, and when you pick up the book it kind of lets you know that this really is the big finale, that in what you are about to read, something will come after all that Frodo and Sam have done, and after all the evil that has spread, if you get what I mean. Something will win, and something will lose. It is the last showdown for Middle Earth and evil.
But I like the Return of the King too because it also holds a unique kind of conclusion, letting you know that Aragorn's role (he had a pretty significant roll in the books and the movie, after all) is coming to a close, and though it doesn't have much to do with Frodo and Sam, one of the biggest things about the Third Age was that the Elves were leaving, and Men were now on their last stand-off against Sauron, and without their king, and without winning the battle and claiming what is theirs, Middle Earth will basically crumble under the rule of evil. So it probably takes a bit of thinking, but this title actually does make sense.
I honor The War of the Ring because it's what Tolkien wanted, but I honor Return of the King because that is what its name turned out to be. Just me n' my drabble!

Yeah, I do tend to get a little long-winded during discussions...and I totally know what you mean about liking The War of the Ring...but like I said, I suppose it all depends on how you look at it. >shrugs<

I think that RotK is the best title for this part of the story... because It's really about how Aragorn takes the decision to be King and how he becomes one...
Beside War of the Ring would have been more adapted for all the book... It's not only the third book which is about the war of the ring but all the books... The War of the Ring began when the Ring was forged and end with its destruction...
I just wanted to know, was War of the Ring supposed to be the title of all the book, before the editor decided to split it into three books ???

Who knows? Maybe Tolkien wanted it to be. Maybe The Great Battle of the Ring? Battle of the Ring? I don't know, because a war really, isn't dealing with one battle and all of a sudden it becomes the conclusion. The RotK is the conclusion to the War of the Ring, because great debates and small battles turn into war and all that concept. So I think Return of the King is good. Aragorn was either gonna take the throne or not.

it's ok, so do i.....at times.... RotK as the title gives away the ending, but WotR doesn't seem like an ending

I think The Return of the King is the better title, because, well, the whole story is actually a war of the ring... and the 3rd volume is, well, the return of a king

but in the 3rd book the war is basicly all or nothing
it's the most imporatnt war in the 3 books

sure, but everyone has been talking about Gondor and it's rulers and now, finally, the King returns. I mean, actually all the wars are somehow connected to the ring....so Tolkien could have named the story The War of the Ring and not LOTR....

Either title would have made sense. The Lord of the Rings makes perfect sense to me,because you're trying to establish for yourself who the true Lord of the Rings is, and in my mind, there is more than one. The War of the Ring would have made just a little less sense, because there was more than one war/battle for it, starting before the Lord of the Rings. Then Tolkien would have had a harder job writing, unless, of course, he wrote it after he had the title. Either way, though, I don't think the world would have loved the trilogy less if it was named The War of the Ring.

I think I prefer Return of the King to War of the Ring. It is a good title, but Return of the King seems more optimistic, even if it does kinda give away the ending...
