I'm a writer myself as well. I currently got a fantasy story going and gah!!!!!! I'm stuck on chapter five. It was inspired by tolkien's realm and the realm of Harry Potter. So I'm definatly having a hard time world building and my story is going nowhere right now.

It's like I have a good idea on what I want to happen but Writing it down on paper seems really hard for me to do with this scene atleast.

I find with fantasy it's hard not write something without using other author's ideas. I'm trying to make my medieval-esque fantasy story original, but it's hard because no matter what I come up with, if I really look at it I can see how it vaguely resembles Star Wars or LotR or some other book.

Well I don't like to use their ideas I like to get inspired by something when I watch a movie of theirs. It happens all the time with me this is my only medieval-story I have another story but it deals with vampires and I wouldn't exactly call that medieval lol

I am also a writer. I am currently working on a novel and have run into the same problems you seem to be having...I completely agree with what everyone here is saying....I also have something to add to it..A friend of mine, who read my book(well whats completed of it), told me something and it made me think and as critical as it sounds or as bad I kind of see some truth within it...He told me that most people who write fiction tend to base characters on people they themselves would like to be, and the settings tend to be places you think would be your personal Utopia(sort of speak) So... If you think that things are sounding familiar to you ,as in things you've read before, you probably subconciously are drawing from other works that you find appealing to you...I hope that helps....I know it was long winded....

It took awhile for me to figure out what I was doing but once I figured it out I had no problem.

Good Luck with your writing....

Just don't forget everything you write is yours whether or not it sounds familiar....(unless you deliberately copy ;) )

Being such a fan if LOTR it was really hard to avoid writing anything remotly influenced by Tolkien, as then i would be really worried that I would be copying... So i went on a completly different route and didn't do a fantasy as i had wanted to originally - i have written an adventure that could quite easily happen in the real life...

That sounds exactly like me with the story I'm writing about a Princess who leads her kingdom to war. It was inspired by both Lord Of The Rings and Harry Potter.

When I'm getting inspired I try to create something different so the scene won't resemble Those two movies since it was inspired by both of them and sometimes it's hard to do.
