Sorry. That's what I meant. I was thinking that the word meant fire (which it does) but I just automatically thought of the Elvish word naur which is fire.

That's interesting Tolkien referred to himself as the secret Fire of Arnor because he was giving the Valar credit for giving him power.

Sorry but I don't get that... *blushes*
Why Tolkien? And what do you exactly mean with this?

Tolkien referred to himself as the Secret Fire?
But Tolkien 'created' the Valar, so he was giving them their powers, so to say....

The three elven rings were made by Celebrimbor and though Sauron never laid his hands on them, they were still ruled by his power and tied to the One Ring.

They are:
Narya - Ring of Fire, kept by Gandalf
Nenya - Ring of Water, kept by Galadriel
Vilya - Ring of Air, kept by Elrond

I think she meant Gandalf, not Tolkien.

Yeah, I thought she meant Gandalf at first, but then it just sounded like a strange typo, but now when I re-read it her post I think she might have meant him referring to Gandalf, but I still don't quite understand the post...

I'm certainly confused. Gandalf was wielder of the Secret Fire, a power given to him by the Valar. Yes? But what is this about Tolkien...?

I didn't know Gandalf called himself Flame of Arnor in the scene... :erm:
I only remember him calling the Balrog 'Flame of Udun.'

I'm not sure either. I recall reading somewhere, maybe in one of Christopher's pieces, that Gandalf and the other Wizards, ie Saruman and Radagast, the other 6 are never mentioned, are indeed Maiar from Valinor sent to help Middle-Earth. Cirdan recognizes this and that's why he gives Gandalf Nenya.

The movie quotes the book almost word by word:

From the FotR, The Bridge of Khazad-dûm:
Quote:
"You cannot pass," he said. The orcs stood still, and a dead silence fell. "I am a servant of the Secret Fire, wielder of the flame of Anor. The dark fire will not avail you here, flame of Udûn. You cannot pass."

From the movie, FotR:
Quote:
"You cannot pass. I am a servant of the Secret Fire, Wielder of the Flame of Anor, You cannot pass. The dark fire will not avail you, Flame of Udûn. Go Back to the Shadow! You shall not pass."

Thanks, Eä. That was helpful. :D

Feanaro, there were only five Istari. Curunír the White, Olorin the Grey, Aiwendil the Brown, and Allatar and Pallando, the Blue Wizards. Those last two went into the East, and are never featured in any stories except for Tolkien's essay on the Istari, in which he says that he thinks it is probable that they, like Saruman/Curunír, succumbed to the temptation of power and things to rule.

In fact it's Narya, the ring of fire...

@Aerandir: Where the heck did you find the names of Radagast and the Ithryn Luin? I read a lot of books but I can't remember having read their names somewhere.

:D It's in The Unfinished Tales, in the chapter "Of the Istari" or whatever--it's Tolkien's essay on them. It contains all of their names. I love that section. I feel very knowledgable after reading it and knowing that others don't read it. :P
