That was interesting to read Jax, but it didn't help me more picturing you life though, but thank you for posting it.

I don't think I've grown back into stuff yet... I loved a couple of books when I was younger but I haven't read them since... it's like I'm afraid of reading them again and find out they've lost their magic...

I would like to hear your opinions on raising children. Last night I watched a documentary about parents who believed in spanking their children. When the child did something they were not supposed to the parents' would give a couple of swats with a little sort of branch-made-into-a-whip-sort-of-thing. True, they didn't hit their children in anger, it looked very controlled and when the child had apologized it recieved a hug and everything was fine... The children accepted the spanking as a part of their education and they also said that is a way they wanted to raise their own kids.

Umm.. what do you think about it? Is it okay? Did your parents spank you and would you do it if necessary to your own future children?

@JF: I visted London's Disney Store last summer for the first time and I could have bought a thousand things. Everything's just so cute there. ;)
I can't imagine a childhood without Disney either. :)

@Eä: My parents never spanked me and I can't imagine to spank my children one day. I mean there are other ways to teach a child what he or she is allowed to do and what not. Spanking is not necessary in my opinion.

@ Rose - Well I don't mind admitting the fact at 19 and 4 months old, the Disney store is always on my list of shops to go to, if I'm ever in a city where they have one.

@ Ea - I don't believe my parents have ever spanked me. I may have been slapped on the arm a couple of times, but not properly whacked or anything. Personally I don't agree with it, as it may start out being a punishment and the parents may be calm when they first start, but I've seen programmes where people are trying to find alternate ways to spanking, and when tempers flare up and even when the kids don't do anything that warrants spenking, the parents do end up spanking again. So I think there is always the danger that kids get smacked for little or no reason.

100 people. So you must literally know everybody! I used to live in a town of 8,000 and I thought that was tiny! :P Now I'm in a town of about 40-50,000 which is nicer, I mean, we have a mall with a Dillards and Sears, we have Target and Wal-Mart and 3 grocery stores (huh, my old town had 4. Figure it out), several fast food and sit-down places, 2 different cinemas, a Home Depot, and now just coming in, finally, a Lowes. Besides several churches, schoolas, a couple health food stores, and not to mention tourist stops within decent driving distance. Not a bad place to live in.

Jax, sounds like you're a do-it-yourself person, who likes a lot of physical work to earn your bread and meat. :)
As for me, I prefer "sprinking little minds with knowledge" as if I remember correctly Professor Umbridge says in the Order of the Phoenix ...or is it someone in Roll of Thunder Hear My Cry

Brings up another topic. Now that you're "gown up" you've probably "grown back into" some children's books (you know, as CS Lewis states to his goddaughter in the Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe. Mine include complete Hans Christian Andersen, complete Grimms, complete 1001 Nights, Little House series, some GA Henty books, Hobbit, Mara Daughter of the Nile, besides the books I mentioned before and many others.

(sorry Like I said I dont' get on much afraid I'm a little late in replying to this lol)

But no.. actually I don't know half the people in my town. I know the people at church and a few others like relatives and friends of family. But really I don't go anywhere to meet people besides church other than that I am always at the farm... lol *shrugs*

And Yeah I supose you could say that, I am use to do hard work. Everyone says I work hard at least.. (most everyone)

For me it's the same. ;) I'm 19 years and 6 months old and I love to go shopping at Disney stores and similar shops as well. But unfortunately we don't have any Disney store in Germany, so I can't go there that often.

Me too. :-) I wish I was 5 years younger, as there is a chain of bear factories now, where you can make your own, bear, watch it actually being filled with stuffing, choose a voice box and there is a whole range of clothes for them. *ah* My favourite cuddley, a dog called Fluff will be 12 this year. :D It was only a few years ago I stopped sending him Christmas and birthday cards and buying him presents. There's actually a nice story about how Fluff came to be...

It was Christmas Eve 12 years ago and I woke up in the early night (probably about 12 or something) and I noticed my parents door was open (as they were still downstairs) and on the bed was a red and green parcel which seemed to be made of a satin material and was very squishy. On the other side was a zip, and just as I was about to undo the zip, I heard my parents and went back to bed. The next day, the last present I was given was this strange parcel. I unzipped the zip, and with a bit of help, turned the parcel inside out....and there was this cute little beige dog, with brown ears, a brown velvet nose, red cheeks, and a satin red and green bow tie that matched the parcel. *squee* And that was the beginning of Fluff. My mum later told me, he went into a shop and she saw him behind a counter (the last one) but some woman askd about him first. My mum as really disappointed, but the lady who had Fluff said her daughter (who was the same age as me at the time) was too old for him, so she handed Fluff back. At which point my mum said, that her daughter wasn't, and that she's have him. :-) I love the whole story surounding Fluff. And he has been spoilt, he's had rocking chairs, clothes, waistcoats he even had a passport and he's been everywhere with me, he even went to Paris three times.

Ah, what a memory.

@ Jax - I don't like shopping either, especially clothes shopping. The only time I like shopping is before and after Christmas, especially when I have money to spend. ;)

i know tolkien hated the disney films, but i still can't help loving them. for some reason, basil the great mouse detective was always my favourite as a child. bizarre! i always found pinocchio the scariest - the bit when they turned into donkeys really scared me when i was a little kid.

i do wish they hadn't disneyfied the endings of all the stories though - my childhood world came crashing down about my ears when i found out that in the original story the little mermaid doesn't get the prince.

That's true... and that's what sort of the replies I expected (and hoped for). There was another example in this documentary. They had this closed fireplace thingy in the living room, which of course got hot when lit, and when the kids were small, like babies who had just learned to crawl around, the parents would teach them not to go near the fireplace by smacking their fingers, just lightly and say "NO" every time they came near, so they associated that particular place with something bad and recognized it as off-limit.
I just couldn't help thinking of dog training...

Hmm, I've been interested to read all of your guys' comments on spanking.
When I was a child, I was spanked a few times, I never associate it with anything bad. It really did teach me not to do whatever bad thing I did. Of course, I was a pretty good child, at least that's what my parents tell me, so they didn't have to spank me that much. And it gave them something to threaten me with "Don't do that unless...." I think I turned out pretty well :teehee:
I think they used this method of punishment, because that's what their parents did to them. My Grandfather used to threaten my dad and his brothers with his belt. This of course led them not to do anything bad.
I think spanking only works on some people, and the method they choose to use it in......Of course I am in NO way advocating Spanking.

Anyways, Disney! I love Disney.

We are shaped through our parents... but 'spanking is bad because violence is bad' (as generally accepted in society - but we might need proper definitions for 'violence'). These people believed they did something good - and necessary - for their children. They had a strong religious faith and believed they had to spank their children in order to make them good people.
I think it's difficult for us, being our parents kids, to judge what a good upbringing is, since we never tried any different...

I need to go shopping. It's spring and I need clothes... dear me, I don't want to... I go shopping very rarely, but when I eventually do I enjoy it very much and spend quite a lot of money, because I buy pants/jeans, shirts and whatever I need!

Well, I don't know about spanking being bad...

Not sure how many of you are christians but if you are you probably recognize the saying "Spare the rod, spoil the child."

There is a certain amount of punishment that is necisary to bring children up properly. Although I do agree that it can be taken to an extreema nd physical disciplin is not always the answer.
*shrugs* that's just me naturally.

my parents spanked us..... lots actualy (because we were exceptonaly ornery children)

And to be 100% hoenst I used to think they were mean about it but now I can see the good it did and I wouldn't take it away if I could. It just depends on why and how the parents spank their kids I think.

What a cute story, JF! :) That's really sweet. I still have a teddy bear that my uncle gave me at my birth, and it's still my favourite stuffed animal.
There are even bear factories by now? I've never heard of them before, but that sounds really great. It must be a paradise for children. :) *wishes to be younger as well*
