I think they are like... things that happen that wouldn't be expected. Like, a statistical anomaly. I will go and look it up though.

Anomaly:
1. a deviation from the common rule, type, arrangement, or form.
2. an odd, peculiar, or strange condition, situation, quality, etc.
3. an incongruity or inconsistency.
4. Grammar. irregularity.
