How does one tell if one's copy is a first edition? The only info I can find in mine is "first printed in Great Britain"...

hmm.. I don't really know. But since the Children of Hurin is new it must be a first edition.

If there are more editions than the current (and first one) it's supposed to be printed on the title page where the year of release and the copyright are.

Did anyone read and finish The Children of Hurin yet?
And how do you like it so far? I haven't heard much about it yet and I didn't buy it (I haven't even seen it around).

Same here (all common editions Tolkien books) ... except 'The Children of Hurin' now! ;) heh.

Well you would notice that it's a first edition when on the copyright and publishing page there is nothing written about the edition of the book. When, for example, a book is in it's third edition, on that page would be written:-

First Edition Published 2001
Second Edition Published 2002

I bought it but haven't started yet! Can't wait though! heh :)

Ok I'll do my best!:) The Front cover is a scene with Turin in a black cloak and wearing the Dragon-helm of Dor-lómin (by Alan Lee). The book has 320 pages with all the Appendices and Introductions. The whole story is, I guess, about 250 pages long.

Yes. Including Geneaology Tables and an Index of the names that appear in the book. Plus, a two page map of Beleriand.

What I meant was Tolkien's other books have different front covers in different countries (or with different publishers), but since this is the first edition, and since the honoured Alan Lee made the illustrations it is most likely the same front cover all over the world. :-)

Lol--there is no such thing as a local library around here. :annoyed2: So I have to buy it, which I'll do when the price goes down. :)

Mate, the library owns. Its like a bookshop, except you can read the books and not pay a penny ( unless you decide to keep it for longer than 3 weeks lol) I like going there. Im certain I have singlehandedly doubled the collection of fiction in there.
