It's okay...but watch your back for a few days. Before I come to my senses, I just might hunt you down and murder you.
I've thought of another thing in defense of Eragon. People complained about him being too stuck up, or sassy, or something like that! Can't remember the exact word. Anyway, that's why I loved the character. I could actually relate to him. All those annoying Mary Sue characters in other stories that never do anything wrong...can't stand 'em. Whenever Eragon did something foolish, I would yell, "STUPID! Don't do that, you'll get yourself killed! Oh...dang...I probably would've done the same thing..."

Once again, I agree completely.
I NOT COUNT THE FOLLOWING AS A SPOILER, BUT SOME MAY.

That is one of the things I missed in Eldest. After Durza's attack and everything else Eragon has been through, he is no longer the naive mooncalf he was in the first book. It made his character much harder to relate with.

Aha! I finished Eragon! w00t...now I'm just #234 in line for my library's 49 copies of Eldest...
Anyway, thoughts on Eragon. I originally avoided reading it because I thought it would be a complete Tolkien rip-off. The title alone made me mad - sounded too much like Aragorn for my taste. But finally, thanks partly to everyone on the forum, I decided to read it.
The beginning was a little weak. It wasn't very gripping, and I kept noticing that Chris P. repeatedly TOLD how the characters looked instead of SHOWING (basic rule of writing), which started to get on my nerves after a while. However, I soon found it pretty gripping, quite a page-turner. I admit to doing a couple doubletakes over a couple names (Vanilor? Beirland? I immediately saw Valinor and Beleriand), and I was a little miffed about how he took Tolkien's interpretations of the Elves, including their coming from across the sea.
I also predicted a few events, but I actually didn't find the whole story predictable overall. It's a worthy book even for an adult to have written, and it's even more impressive that it was written by such a young guy. And he was homeschooled, too! *cheers*
Oh yeah, Eragon did pass out too much, but oh well. Besides that, I enjoyed it very much. In fact, I spent most of Sunday reading it cover to cover because I didn't want to put it down.
I agree with Herenya and everyone else who pointed out that Arya was NOT a damsel in distress; she was obviously stronger than Eragon but had the misfortune of being captured (like anyone else would have been in her situation!!!) during her mission.

Thank you! *claps* (And Nie, too!) And I think Arya goes on to show in "Eldest" that she is not a damsel is distress. She doesn't really do anything to prove it (but she not forced into that sort of situation) but I felt it was giving an impression of a strong women. She was described as one... and I think that's the image the author was trying to put forward. Maybe he didn't quite succeed in the way people wanted, but no one is perfect.
I can't wait to read the next book! (Apparently green dragon on cover) And I feel really, really sorry for the rider of the red dragon. I actually forgot about the red dragon, and was rather taken aback when it appear... oh, yeah, that's right - sort of thing.
(Arwen, that means technically you are 4th in line for one copy of an Eldest book... )

Gah! PLEASE no more spoilers, okay everyone? How about this is the Eragon and the trilogy thread with no Eldest spoilers, and the one up there *points* is the spoiler thread?

Lol, Arwen. I've actually read the first seventeen chapters, and I'm going to read more today. See, my Mom, Dad, and brother Rad all love to read as much as I do, but we don't like to shell out money for a book until it's paperback if we can help it. So long ago we devised a way to get past it. Borders is a bookstore that has a cafe, armchairs, and comfy carpets. So we go for a few hours, curl up, and try to get as much of our books read as possible. Then we come back a few days/weeks later and read more until we're done. I've made two trips so far and I'm looking forward to another one today! This way, we read the book in perfect comfort, and don't have to pay a penny.
