I have seen this topic mentioned in a passing by fashion here. However I have never seen a thread devoted to this topic. So I decided that it was about time that somebody started one. :-D
Would you be willing to name your child (if you were to have one/or have another one) after a Lord of the Rings character, a place or thing in Middle Earth, JRR Tolkien, Peter Jackson, an actor/actress from Lord of the Rings, or give your child an Elvish name?
Personaly speakig, I would do it in a heart beat. I love Lord of the Rings and I think that some of the Lord of the Rings related names are the most beutiful names in all the world. I especialy love the name Eowyn for a girl and the names Frodo, Faramir, and Peregrin for a boy. (Though the name Eowyn is probabley the only above listed name that I am one hundred and fifty percent sure that I would want to name a child of mine after Lord of the Rings character wise.) I also am a fan of Elvish names and would storngly consider giving a child an Elvish name. Then if the name "William" counts (because it is after a character played Orlando Bloom who played Legolas...this is a streatch...lol) then I certainly would name a son (if I was ever to have one) that.
So would you being willing to name your child after a Lord of the Rings character, JRR Tolkien, an Lord of the Rings actor/actress, Peter Jackson, or give your child an Elvish name?

I would definitely give my child and Elvish name, no question. Preferably a name from the History books, and not LotR, because it would be less embarassing. I can't imagine ever wanting to name my child 'Legolas' or 'Aragorn', because of Orlando and Viggo. But names like 'Idril', 'Indis' or even 'Elladan', 'Elrohir' or 'Arwen', I would definitely pick.

Oh, I would most definitely. I'd give them Elvish names but I don't think I would give them LOTR based names. Just as Haldir said, I would most likely dig into the Histories for a name and or names. I too, am also quite fond of the Idril. Honestly, I think that would be a very lovely name for a daughter.

Well, I'm kind of spilt here… I would love, love, love to give my kid a LotR name but I wouldn't want them to get teased or (if they ever wanted to get something with their name on it) to have difficulty finding things with their name on it ect. It would also depend on what my husband wanted...
So I'm not really sure which way to go..... but I have always thought Galadriel would make a very pretty girl name.

that's a very interesting question, Drew! :-D

I've decided that my kids are going to have either Elvish middle names or names of LOTR characters as their middle names. :) (I think William Aragorn and Elizabeth Arwen have a nice ring to them, don't you?)

Granted, finding a guy who will tolerate this might be a tad hard. :P

I probably wouldn't give my kid a LotR name for a first name, so they wouldn't get teased about it, but I'd definitely consider it for a middle name. I'd choose something less known, too, not Frodo, Aragorn, or something like that.

I'd name them after certian names, teasing might be a problem, so maybe a middle name. Or even naming them after the actors that played that character.

I have a friend and she knows someone who names her kids Galadriel Elizabeth, Rosie, and Eleanor.

I think that some of the names would be great, but really, you have to think about what the name will do to the child's mentality, you wouldnt want to push LotR on them, only to have them grow up and hate the books.

^good point. I have agree with you there.... I would hate to think I was the one who made my kids despise some of the best books in the world. :erm:

It wouldn't be... a name is a name. All names originated from somewhere, whether it be religious, from tales, myths, legends or stories. Middle-earthian names is just like that.

I don't think my children will ever be in a situation where there are large numbers of immature peers. Therefore I'm fairly comfortable using LotR based names, though I would not name them after a main character. I have always had a fondness for the name "Eruanna" (a translation of my own, very common name). Everyone I talk to points out the similarity in sound to 'marajuana', which I think is unfortunate. I might use it anyway.
It would be easy to piece together an Elvish name that simply sounds pretty and foreign. Most people wouldn't need to know where it was from.

Maybe just an Elvish middle-name.

I love the Lord of the Rings. I wouldn't mind giving my child an LotR-related name. The Elvish language is so beautiful. Of coure it would be strange, and I would, of course, always let my kid know that they can legally change their name as soon as they're an adult, if they absolutely couldn't stand it :-P

I don't think I'd choose well-known name, though. I would pick maybe Luthien for a girl, because that nam is so beautiful. With the exception of Galadriel, as I adore that name.

I've named pets after LotR-two fish we had were named Frodo and Samwise by me.

There was a girl on gurl.com that was named Bronwen, and she said her mom chose that because her mom loves LotR, so apparently it's not so strange...
