I'm just wondering... randomly... while watching the film with my sister... why does Christine remove the Phantom's mask near the end of them film, in front of everyone? I mean, she knew that he was pretty darn conscious about it and like... yeah. Wasn't that a pretty stupid thing to do?

Well I don't rightly know, lol. I think she wanted everyone to see him, and to see that he wasn't a Phantom but just a real man, I don't know exactly. That's a pretty darn good question.
I'm sure teh Kit and teh Rin can answer that for you. At 5.30 in the morning, my mind is curiously blank.
I'm sure they saw the 'real man' out of him. Or everyone was just judgmental and freaked out! lol

That scene has always confused me a little too. Personally, I took it as an act of desperation from confusion about who she was inging with. It's obvious from her facial expression that she suspects this is The Phantom throughout the entire song. Perhaps she rips off the mask in a fit of confusion, especially after he starts singing Raoul's song to her.
Then again, she may already know it is the Phantom, and she's getting scared, so she wants Raoul and the policemen to DO SOMETHING ALREADY. By unmasking the Phantom, it makes the situation a bit more dire and might provoke them to get him (and her) off the stage.
JF's answer makes sense to me too, that she just wanted everyone to see him for who he was. But...unveiling his scar in front of a huge, pampered and judgemental crowd was not the best solution to this. I can see how her emotions might have led to this action, though. At the climax of the song, she may have felt particularly attatched to him and oblivious of what the audience would think.

Oh gosh. I'd have to see it again, it's been a year since I've seen PotO.

Okay, I'm new to the board, but certainly NOT new to POTO. However, I'm more of a fan of the theatre version than the movie version. How many of you have seen the play? Oh, and I love the book too!
I must say, I'm thrilled to find a POTO thread on this board!

Johnny's Fan wrote: I think it may have also been from Christine's part, her finally realising that the Phantom is just a man, and that in revealing him she is pretty much telling him that she's not going to let him get away with what he has been doing anymore.
I think when he is singing she knows it his him, but once again, she was sort of under a spell. When he repeats the words Raoul said to her and changes them to his own, that's when she decides that this is not going to carry on.
I only saw POTO the other day, so I think I understand that part more clearly now.
@ Guard of the Citadel - No, I have never seen the show, I would love to though! I haven't read the book either.
Ah....I highly recommend the book. And I highly recommend the play! I did like the film however it cannot top the play! My first exposure to POTO was the play, then I had to promptly go find the book, which I devoured and then waited for the play to come to my town so that I could now see it through eyes of thorough understanding. I've now seen it more times than I will admit too, plus I have the privilege of knowing some former cast members of the national Tour. Thus, I waited eagerly for the film. What I enjoyed was the backstory that could be told, which you can only catch if you listen closely at the play. For me, personally, the play is the better medium. And the novel must be read!

I would LOVE to see the play! I've read the book myself, and I've enjoyed it very much, but the form of media that has had the largest impact on me is the movie. So, I guess I see the story through movie-colored glasses. (For example, I was shocked and found it toally weird that the chandelier falls in the middle of the story, rather than at the end, in the live version.) But I do believe, being intended for live thatre performances, PotO truly shines its brightest on a stage. (If only I could see it! Grr.)

Well, I had heard the music long before I saw the movie, and actually, in the movie (this being the newest one mind you, I haven't seen any of the others) they changed a line in one of the songs to cover up the fact that the chandelier hadn't fallen.
It is in Masquerade, after the first chorus... I can't remember the lines before it, they were toasting the New Year... let me look it up...
It starts with "What a night! What crowd!" then it goes on a little bit... "Here's a toast: to a prosperous year!"
And they changed the next line in the movie from "To our new chandelier" to "To our friends that are here." Clever.
Just a random fact for you.

I recently saw PotO on stage. It was absolutely incredible!! I completely fell in love with it. I've always loved the music and the movie, and the book as well... seeing it on stage was just a completely different experience. The guy playing the Phantom was amazing... he could sing with such emotion in his voice.
