Lol--there is no such thing as a local library around here. :annoyed2: So I have to buy it, which I'll do when the price goes down. :)

Mate, the library owns. Its like a bookshop, except you can read the books and not pay a penny ( unless you decide to keep it for longer than 3 weeks lol) I like going there. Im certain I have singlehandedly doubled the collection of fiction in there.

Just finished this today. I dunno whether my reading comprehension level has increased or what, but I understood this book loads better than I understood the Silm. And I enjoyed it more as well! The story of Túrin Turambar is a sad and dark one. If you haven't read it, don't expect very many happy endings.

One thing that really stuck out was the fact that Túrin marries his own sister. Disturbing, no? Of course they didn't realise they were related, so it was understandable.

I bought the book when it came out and finished it in a matter of days. Really good and really easy to read (way easier then the Silm - as a reveiw puts it, even non-ringers can stay with it). Yes, I found it dark, and very sad. But the illustrations add so much to it! Alan Lee is amzing! Yes, well, so is JRR Tolkien, and Christopher Tolkien. :-D

Ya know, I didn't even think to mention Alan Lee's wonderful artistry. He's amazing! The colours and depth really depicted the current mood of the story and what was going on. And the chapter drawings were so detailed! Great work on his part. :)

I read it weeks ago. It's a pity that I already knew most of the story because only a few details were new but I enjoyed it still...

yeah I know most of the story as well, but still I love reading it. I love all these little details that have been added to the story in the Sil/UT. And also I enjoy reading it with the illustrations, because they're just awesome

I'm about in the middle of the book right now. I also know the story already so there should't be much suprises along the way. I'm doing a rewiew about the book in to a teens literature magazine called Luku-Fiilis (I work there) so I got it for free from the Finnish publisher. Otherwise I couldn't have bought it. As others have already said the illustrations are amazing. I love them.

I read it and liked it too. :) It was so sad and dark, but I expected that, since the story is in the Silm in condensed form. I feel so bad for Turin and Nienor and everyone. Turin makes me kind of angry with all his pride and put-upon airs when he accidentally kills Saeros. I also hate how unnecessarily cruel he is to Saeros, eventhough Saeros was mean to him... Very good though, and of course I LOVE Alan Lee. :)

I personally really enjoyed this book; as one of my friends said, even though none of the material in it is new, "it's good to finally have it all in one place."

Of course, the story of Turin is essentially one of the best tragedies of all time. It's interesting, the first time I read the story in The Silmarillion (at the age of 12) I kept waiting for the happy ending, but it never came. Turin and Nienor's lives are an example of the influence of Morgoth, a picture of the treachery and pain that plagued those who Morgoth interacted with.

Turin is not perfect; indeed, he has many faults. But he acts like a real person, and so I can forgive him a lot. His death brought tears to my eyes. One of the best lines in the whole book in my opinion is one of the last things Turin says, when he discovers the extent of his curse: "Now comes the night."

Overall the book is really well done, and Christopher did a good job at tying all Tolkien's notes together into one story. And the illustrations are brilliant. The one thing I would change is that I wish there were more pictures of the people; but really the artwork is exceptional.

I like the way you said that Altariel Frodo. That pretty much sums up how I felt about it too. It's so good, and it really does show Morgoth's evil really well.

yeah I can only agree. It's really good to have the whole story "in one place" and as I probably already said heaps of times I really like the story of the Children of Hurin, I also think it's one of the best tragedies ever.
I sure would also have liked to have more pictures of the characters, but still I absolutely love the artwork.

I found this a beautiful addition to my Tolkien Book Collection. Though I already read the story in The Silmarillion. I got my copy online for $3 off of amazon, and picked it up the day it arrived in the mail. I mean, the story flows like a beautiful painting, following the strokes of Tolkien's workmanship, and Alan Lee's artistic depictions are simply breathtaking, withholding the air and styles of the movies, while keeping in touch with Tolkien's Universe.

Id have liked it if they, in perhaps an appendix, expanded the Dagor Dagorath; since that plays a big part in the Narn i Hin Hurin; since Turin deals the deathblow to Morgoth in revenge for all the losses and bad things that his family suffered due to him, his servants and whatnot. Besides, I find apocalypses kinda interesting, (like ragnorak and so forth), and this would fuse 2 interests together :P
