Oh! I'm gonna be in that in Febuary! I get to sing On My Own, as I am playing Eponine. But my favorite song is Castle on a Cloud.

I love Les Mis. I love it to death. Well, not quite.
Not only is the music gorgeous, not only do they have so many incredible oboe solos, but the story is so beautiful and intricate and amazing.
It's so powerful, especially if you search deeper into the whole story of redemption and such.

i absolutely love les mis - it's just so powerful and so beautiful. i've known the music for as long as i can remember (we have a cd of highlights from the show, and a video of the 10th anniversary concert) and i went to see the show in london about six years ago. "one day more" and the "finale" never fail to make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up.
the 10th anniversary performance had the most incredible cast possible - colm wilkinson as valjean, philip quast as javert, michael ball as marius, ruthie henshall as fantine, lea salonga as eponine, judy khun as cosette...basically they had the best performer in the world for each role, and the result is simply incredible. the highlight for me is michael ball singing "empty chairs at empty tables" - he sings it amazingly, and you can see from his face that he's completely lost in the song. it's absolutely mesmerising.

^ I second that, Michael Ball is AMAZING. I love every single note he sings as Marius.
I confess I didn't like Colm Wilkinson as Jean Valjean very much. He sang it great but was too kind and gentle for a former convict, if that makes any sense at all.
By the way, you can watch practically the entire 10th Anniversary Concert on YouTube.

i think valjean's meant to be kind and gentle. i know he was a convict, but only because he was stole a loaf of bread to feed his family - he's not really a hardened criminal. personally, i think he's absolutely incredible, but each to their own.
and yeah, michael ball is fantastic. my sister recently saw him play edna turnbull in hairspray in london and she said he was brilliant. she met him and got his autograph, too. ((JF - i know you watched any dream will do, so you may be interested to know that ben ellis (who came fourth) was also in hairspray. my sister didn't like him on the programme, but she said he was actually really good in the show. she met him at the stage door too and he sang happy birthday to her and she got a photo with him, and she said he was really lovely)) _________________ <center>

I've never seen it, but I've heard and sang some of the music from it, and I love it. Bring Him Home can give you chills if it's sung the right way.

^ You can see a lot of it on the YouTube link I gave a couple posts back, if you're interested.  The 10th anniversary concert is about the closest thing yet to a production on DVD.

Colm is a good singer but just very different from what I imagined Valjean to be like. Wow, he played the mother!?  I have a very difficult time picturing that! That's very cool how your sister got to meet him and the other actors too! Johnny's Fan wrote: Colm's voice as Valjean is beautiful. It's a whisper at times, soft and yet sort of harsh. I see what you mean ethelfleda about the emotion Michael Balls shows when he sings "Empty Chairs and Empty Tables". I saw him singing it last night on YouTube. He feels like song, you can tell. Beautifully sung. Hah, yes I saw Michael Ball on the Paul O' Grady show, and then he got his Edna costume on and performed one of the shows songs. A bit different to the Michael Ball I know. 
Ah, well perhaps he has changed. He was always a bit arrogant on the show, but now he's doing something he wants to do, he's probably pretty happy and content.
I am definitely buying the 2-disc DVD of the anniversary concert with any money I get for my birthday. 
Again, just not like I imagined. I read the (abridged  ) book before I started watching clips from the musical and, well, it's just very hard to differ from your initial impressions. 
I'm tempted to find a clip of that, but I'm scared I might be scarred for life and it'll ruin every Michael Ball song for me. _________________

It's the same plot, except the movie didn't include the love triangle between Marius, Cosette, and Eponine. The musical plays this up a lot more. _________________

I think Colm was a wonderful Valjean... 'course, I may be a bit biased, I've only ever seen one other person do it...
My favorite song has got to be The Sewers, when it's circling the barricade in the morning. I can play that on my oboe, and I have trouble not crying when I do.

Well I got my DVD of the 10th anniversary concert last night.
I haven't seen it all in full yet but oh, my... fangirlism strikes again... Philip Quast....  ... amazing voice and he has the loveliest hands.. when he adjusted his microphone... and those eyes...

Anyway, I watched more of it than I intended, and then I went skipping through it to find my favourite songs.
I'm not too impressed by the person who plays Eponine or E-e-- er.. the leader of the students. The woman who plays Eponine looks like a pixie which is actually a bit off-putting and I don't think her voice is a good as the Eponine from the original West End run, her voice is not as clear and the fact it has an American twang is sort of weird after I've spent weeks listening to a Brit singing it. The same goes for er the leader of the students. In his speaking part especially, he is really American which is sort of strange.
I LOVED watching Master of the House with Alun Armstrong, one of my favourite songs, and I LOVED the fact that the cast members behind him we're all joining in. Michael Ball especially seemed to be enjoying himself, swaying to the music and singing the chorus. It was funny watching him and Philip Quast actually, they seemed to be messing around.
Michael Ball really does have such a great voice, I'd always known of him, but never really heard him. I really liked how he acted out his part of I Saw Him Once/A Heart Full Of Love/In My Life/, it just made it more than someone walking up to a microphone and singing.
I am really, really disapppointed with the features though. One 57 minute documentary as the only feature of the second disc. And it's a documentary from 1988 so there was nothing about the concert or even the reunion from 2006.  I just wanted a little but from the original West End show, just so I knew what the people looked like who I have been listening to. But it looked like 1988 was a good year for Les Mis touring the world, as it was snippets from Budapest and Olso and places like that. You'd have thought they would have a bit more about the show and a more recent documentary.

*passes out from shock* *revives self* i can't believe you don't like lea salonga (the girl who plays eponine). personally, i think she's wonderful - i love her voice, and i love the passion with which she sings. and i've never had a problem with the guy who plays enjolras (the leader of the students), except that he fluffs one note. each to their own, i guess. _________________ <center>
