Aiko and Mariko followed Cora, a thick silence lay between them. As they walked slowly on, Aiko stared straight ahead, her dark eyes devoid of any hope. How could I have said such words to him? she thought, pained by the bitter pangs of regret. What if the worse should befall him-and I should never see him again? she thought as the color drained from her cheeks.

I stay for her and not for you. Her final words to him. How could she have been so cold? What did she fear? Love? She shook her head at the thought. Love was nothing but folly-it had no place in the life of a ninja. We are vassals to our lord, she reminded herself. A ninja needs nothing-only the knowledge that she had fulfilled her duty and maintained her honor.

"Even a ninja deserves to feel the bliss of love," Mariko whispered in her ear as if she had read her thoughts.

"Nani? [What?]" Aiko asked in surprise.

You don't need to hide it, Aiko. Mariko's eyes seem to tell her friend. To love another is not a sin.

"They will be fine," Mariko said instead when she spoke again, glancing both at Aiko and Cora in turn. "They are both honorable men. We have to believe that Koga-sama will realize it." she said quietly, hoping to assuage the fears of her friends.

Cora didn't say a word, even when they came to the cave. She entered it and collapsed into tears on one of the matts.

As they arrived in the caves, Aiko sat on the floor in silence slightly apart from Cora, her passive expression hiding her inner turmoil. Had it been under any other circumstance, she would have offered words of comfort to her lord's daughter. But now, she could find no words to give-for she knew that words of assurance would be empty coming from her. Zutao-kun, please be well she prayed silently. Mariko approached Cora quietly and placed a comforting hand on her back as she sat beside her. However, she also remained silent, unsure of what to say to ease Cora's pain. In a fluid motion, Aiko rose to her feet and came to sit beside Mariko. "Cora-sama..." she breathed in a whisper, not knowing what else to say.

The Koga leader looked at the two men kneeling before him, and allowed his eye-brows to raise slightly. They were the last ones he would expect to dis-houner the clan. But then again; they were the first ones he'd expect to own up. He turned fist to Kuroda, but gave no sighn either of them should stop kneeling.

Yashamaru had made his way back to the Koga palace. His stood outside the clan leader's room, leaning on the wall with his arm's crossed. He couldn't hear what was going on in the other room. Yashamaru knew he hadn't done anything to dishonor himself, but wished he could help his two friends. Though Yasha knew all he had witnessed of his friends wouldn't be able to help the clan leader's desicion on how he was going to punish them for the dishonor...

Aiko fell silent as Yashamaru left the three Iako women alone in the cave. Try as she might, she could not dispel the fear or worry that she felt for Zutao. How could I have treated him so coldly? she thought for what seemed to seemed to be the thousandth time. Never before had her heart and her mind been at war with each other. Logic told her that it was best to forget their encounter-that it was best to forget him. She was a shinobi-born only to serve her lord. Yet, love is not governed by logic and now that she found herself trapped within its snares she found she could do little except hope for his return.

Mariko turned her head as Yashamaru left them. She then turned back to Aiko. "You fear for him, you fear for Zutao-kun" she said in a hush tone.

"Hai." Aiko replied as she stared off into the distance.

"Then perhaps we should try to find out how they fare." Mariko replied nonchalantly.

"Nani? [What?]" Aiko asked, surprised that Mariko should voice such a rash idea.

"Why are you so surprised? I know you, Aiko-san. Can you truly admit that you yourself have not thought of the idea?"

"Iya [No], I can not." she whispered back. "But Cora-sama, we can not leave her..." Aiko replied, not wanting to risk any more harm coming upon her lord's daughter.

Cora wasn't listening anymore. She had stopped crying, but she had become hollow. She knew what would happen, in her heart she knew Kuroda would likely die, and until she was proved wrong, she wouldn't let herself feel alive.
