Oh gosh, Haldir, I know what you mean. Loads of people in my class have seen the films and when faced with the book, they were like: "What? Hang, this isn't meant to happen!" and "Arwen saved Frodo from the wraiths, not this Glorfindel guy" and "Where are the elves at Helms Deep?" oh, and check this out..."Who is this Gildor? Or Elladan? Or Elrohir? And this Gil-galad person?" :duh:
Gosh, if they don't know by now who Gil-Galad is....they fail miserably. And here I am trying to explain it, and then some doofus says "But I only care about Legolas" so annoying! *Rolls eyes* :annoyed: :explode:

yeah well.. they half tried I guess.. at least they read the books which is something. But putting the movie facts before the book facts is an absolute no-no for me.

^True, there is that. Doesn't it say something awful about our culture today? We're so used to flashy junk we can't appreciate a good, detailed, deep story.

Although I will say that some people who don't like violence won't watch LOTR for that reason - my best friend really doesn't enjoy violence but she's promised to at least watch some of the "tamer" scenes with me sooner or later. :) I think she'd like at least some parts of it, I know she can appreciate details in a story.

Yes,this happened to me a lot.
I remember when I was at school(secondary,to be precise)and the 1 movie premiered and everyone was so excited, but in my class I asked who read the books and nobody did(except me,of course).
I was so mad, well in my class they were so dumb, they didn't talk anything from movies,books,etc...only they talked about sport and pretty boys.
They didn´t even know how to write The Simpsons!
They wrote The Simons, with Ber,Lizza,Made,Omo,Manee! :disgust:

Hi! I'm new to the board and I've been reading this thread. May I just say I feel your pain? I'm gathering that most of you are young. For the record, I'm much, much older than you, but when I was your age, I was into reading Gone With the Wind every year. Imagine what it was like being a Civil War geek? No one ever wanted to talk about THAT, I can assure you! Now, with my recent discovery (well...since FOTR) and love of LOTR, I have the advantage of my best bud coming along for the ride! So I have someone to talk LOTR with. For you guys though, like I said, I do understand your frustration! It's so difficult when you have something that you love so much, yet your friends just don't get it! Or, even worse, don't want to get it! Just makes ya want to scream, doesn't it? Well, take comfort....you have this board and your buddies here! A GWTW fan from many years ago didn't have that! hahahahaha!

Unfortunately most of my friend's have only seen the movies, and they really only saw them because it was just another movie to watch, not because they were genuinely interested in the story. I did have a friend who loved LotR in elementary school, but now she thinks it's stupid. :( The only good thing about this is that she's going to give me all her LotR swag. ^^;;

In fact, the only people I can have LotR-discussions are my sister and my English teacher, who loves it just as much as I do.

Citadel, you do make a very good point...without the internet and forums like these I'd probably be a very lonely little Ringer.

You know, it was really funny...the other day my PE teacher randomly started quizzing me about LOTR. I think his first question was "Who played Gollum?" which took me like half a second to think of. :P Then he asks, "So what were the names of that one Elf's knives?" meaning Legolas' white knives. And he wouldn't listen when I said I didn't know their proper names - he threatened to fail me if I didn't get names by the next day! :teehee: He forgot the next day, but I had been going to lie and say their names were "Mae govannen" and "Namarië" (ie "Greetings" and "Farewell).

Ok, so I must admit, I was an ignorent movie fan until I turned 10. I'd seen parts of the movies (until my mom made my dad turn it off, saying "it's too violent") and read the last page of each book (i shouldn't have, but I did...). But once I got into it, beware to those that crossed my path! I had a neighbor that I used to play with who asked me, "If the books were published after the movies, why do the books come out first?" I was apalled at someone not knowing that the books came out decades before! Said so too. Then my cousin claimed that reading the books and wathcing the movies had "desencitised" me to the magic and evil of fantasy writing... :annoyed: so... That's my rant on this subject...

You want to be careful with how you say that. I don't think you mean that the LotR movies are flashy junk.

I think it's perfectly acceptable to like only the movies. As long as you're ABSOLUTELY OBSESSED with the movies. Sometimes the book can just be too hard to read, and the movies are so beautiful, I think it's great to love the movies, even if you're not in love with the books yet.

She was referring to what Aerlinn said:

Well, I don't know, maybe I'm just a book purist, but people who like the movies, but don't like the books are no real obsessed LotR fans for me even if they're absolutely obsessed with the movies, because the books are what LotR is all about and the movie is "just" an interpretation of the books so to say. And yeah, the LotR books are the original and it's where all LotR fandom started.

LOL so I only got interested in LotR a couple of months ago (I know, horrible), but I don't think I'm an ignorant fan (at least I hope not...) I have the books but haven't read them yet. But thanks to the crazy detailed LotR online encyclopedias, I know quite a bit more than the average fan does. Which pleases me. I need to find a time to read the books... and the Silmarillion.

I think LotR is one of the stories that you can get lost in, it's so in depth/detailed. Middle Earth seems so real, and all because of the detail that is invested in the stories. I lovvve it.

^I know. I think there are a lot of layers in the movie. The music and the language, the props and set--everything in the movies was designed and all of the design was inspired by Tolkien (well, a good deal of it was, anyway). It's a work of art considering it's supposed to be a film: Most movies take a few months to shoot and don't take nearly as long as it did for TLotR to edit. [and the actors are gorgeous.] It's true that it's just an adaptation, but still--the movies make me feel like I'm in Middle-Earth.

Hopefully, when you're so obsessed with TLotR movies, you'll be inspired to read the books eventually. If I didn't totally love the movies, I wouldn't have had the motivation to read the books.

Oh dear.

I just never cared what other people thought of the things I love. If they don't like it, it's their loss. If they think they know everything but don't, I just let them live in their ignorant little bubble and move on. There is no use getting stressed up over it or worked up about it. It's obviously not that important to them and it won't matter even if you try to explain things to them until you're blue in the face. I bet there are plenty of things they are interested in and know plenty about that you couldn't give a rat's behind about.

To them it's just another book. Just another film. You can't expect the world to be just as interested or knowledgeable in the things you love as you ;)

I've got a good LotR friend who loves the movies to death, but hasn't read the books. Tolkien is too detailed for her (her attention span is a little short for it) but we have good talks about LotR and she's interested in the little bits of info and stuff. But I can't stand people who prance around going "Legolas is the best of them all because he's blond and hot." Personally, I don't love LotR for any fan-girly reasons, I love it because its a wonderful, evolved story.

And people who say HP better, or that LotR is a ripoff from Hp? :annoyed: Hp= Shallow.

I used to like HP, but with the rapid decline of story potential, I turned my back on HP for good.
