Elaine moved her eyes from her husband's face and instead focused on the form of Lord Bellings standing in the doorway. "He's run off. We had a right nice argument and he stormed out. I would have thought he'd be back by now..." She shot a worried glance to the window. "But I'm sure he will be back by tomorrow. Give him time to cool off." She attempted a smile in front of their guest, trying to make things seem hardly as bad as they really were.

-----------

Mr. Cantrell nodded, hoping to get the whole story out of the boy. It would be an easy task considering it had worked on his two teenagers at home before and maybe it could work again. He tucked the bundle under his arm once more and motioned for Cutler to follow him down a dirt path through a cluster of trees. The path wound like a snake as they traveled farther into the woods before finally stumbling on a small house in the clearing. It didn't appear to be much, but it was a house nonetheless and was kept as neat as possible. The grass clearly had not been cut for a week or two, and the rusted iron fence boardering the property needed replacing.

Darkness had fallen now, and the stars were beginning to sparkle brighter. Fireflies blinked a green hue as they floated over the grass and Mr. Cantrell swung the heavy gate open. "I have two kids myself... they're wonderful. Keep everything in line while I'm on duty." Two dogs that had been laying on the porch began barking and wagging their tails; two black and white boarder collies whose excitement could just not be contained. "Moon, Bel, shh!" Mr. Cantrell laughed, trying to open the door while being nearly pushed over by the two animals.

[[Moon is a dude and Bel is a girl, just so you know. ;-) ]]

Lord Beckett's (senior) face grew hot with fury and shame for his son. his son talking back to his mother? And why was Elaine talking about it in front of esteemed company? He didn't want his son's insolence getting gossiped about around to the whole community. "Where did the foolish boy go, Elaine?" he glared at his wife with an unrelenting frown. "back by tomorrow? Time to cool off? I'll give him some time to cool off. Talking back to you like that? And this?" he waved the paper at his wife. Suddenly he remembered the presence of their guest and tried to check his temper. However, he had seen through his wife's weak mask of trying to make things better than they were and he was getting more and more upset with his son. It was extremely lucky for Cutler that he hadn't come home early that night, Anthony thought. He turned to Lord Bellings and tried to calm himself down before saying anything more.

____________

Cutler shoved his hands in his pockets and followed the older man down the path. He couldn't help but yawn and he barely kept himself from stumbling on a stray root, which had been hiding under the dirt on the path. He tried to look through the darkening woods, but the trees and the forest growth shrouded his field of vision. For a brief moment he wondered where exactly he was being taken, however, then right before his eyes he saw a very small and humble home. When compared to his father's vast mansion it actually looked like nothing better than a shack. He pondered over if it was just the stable and the house was yet to come until the soldier led him through the gate and to the door. He didn't respond to what Mr. Cantrell said. At this point in the day he really didn't care about any other kids either. Cutler jumped slightly as two furry objects came up out of no where and attacked them. He kept close to the man in front of him, figuring that way the dogs might not take too much notice of him. Perhaps he would blend in with their obvious master, he thought. He didn't want to deal with these two annoying animals tonight. However, since his mother had never let him keep a real dog, especially anywhere close to the house, he had a fleeting thought of perhaps seeing more of them the next day.

(awww! That's cute! I love dogs!)

Christine stepped into her childhood home, dragging her new friend inside with her. Her grin widened, "You need not ask. You deserve to stay somewhere nice, after all you have been kind enough to me."

She stepped into the middle of the room and spun about laughing, watching the chandelier hung high above the doorway distort itself as her spinning increased. After one last childish spin she grabbed the staircase to keep her balance and looked over to Julie, "Come, we need to find you a room."

Elaine shrunk back, not wanting to deal with her husband's temper as well. Now she knew where Cutler got it from. "Now now, Anthony," Elaine said softly, touching her husband's arm gently. "There's no need to worry. We've had worse dealings with him aside from this. Each time he apologized; this time won't be any different."

Lord Bellings craned his neck from where he stood. "Is there some sort of problem, Lord Beckett?"

-----------

Mr. Cantrell dug around in his pocket for the key to the house as the two dogs sniffed curiously at Cutler, wondering where this new arrival had come from. Finally, Mr. Cantrell jiggled a key in the doorknob and it opened with a loud creak. "Come, Cutler," he motioned as Moon and Bel rushed inside, still barking excitedly. Mr. Cantrell dropped the keys on a shelf and hung his coat with the two others before heading down a small hallway to where the light of a brightly burning fire danced on the wallpapered walls. In a large, worn chair in the corner of the room was a boy, probably a year or so younger than Cutler, curled up comfortably with a book. He didn't even take notice that his father and another wealthier boy were now standing in the same room. His blue-grey eyes just keep scanning the words on the pages and flipping them occasionally.

"Oliver?" Here the boy looked up, "I'd like you to meet Cutler Beckett; he's going to be staying with us tonight."

[Sorry for not being really active in this thread lately, I'll try to do better.]

Julie looked around in awe when being taken into the house by Christine. She was reminded a little of her old home which she shared with her brother and his wife, until only some weeks ago. "Thank you." She spoke again, really meaning it. After several days sleeping outside in the cold, thinking of spending the coming night in a soft, warm bed made her feel incredibly thankful towards her newfound friend.
She let out a fullhearted laughter when watching Christine spinning around in the hall, before she nodded and followed her, sprinting up the staircase. She couldn't await seeing the room she would stay in for a while, so joyfull she was.

Lord Beckett turned back to his wife. “No, no different at all. What is the point, Elaine, if he apologizes but never amends his ways so it never happens again?” he scowled, but managed to calm himself down for his wife’s sake and for the sake of putting on a good face in front of his colleague. “The boy needs to learn once and for all to respect you and his studies. I don’t ask that much from him and he’s falling into lazy and reckless habits. His attitude is quite enough to displease anyone lately as well. And How do you think him being out all night reflects on us?” He shook his head, glancing back at the letter and then back to his wife before quickly turning back to Lord Bellings. He managed to reply with, “um, no, there’s no problem but…” he paused and looked back at his wife before continuing, “make yourself at home in my study. I need to talk to Elaine.” he put on his best face.

_______________

Cutler followed Mr. Cantrell and the two dogs into the house, surprised that he let them inside. This was a house no matter how poorly it looked and his mother had always told him animals belonged outside. But his eyes hadn't fooled him even in the tired state he was. The two dogs were there. He wondered how clean the house could be with two dogs living in it. He was about to say something about the animals when Mr. Cantrell led him down a hallway and into another room with a glowing, warm fire. He craned his neck to look around Cantrell’s form and at the boy sitting in the old chair that his mother probably would’ve had a heart attack if she had seen. He wondered how long it had been sitting in that exact position. It looked like it had been there for ten or more years or at least to Cutler’s well-bred eyes that’s how it looked. He furrowed his brow and bit his lower lip, hanging back just a little. Just in case he decided to change his mind about Mr. Cantrell and this little house and dash back out-of-doors and into the free air again. His mind was racing over the possibilities of all this when Mr. Cantrell stopped all thoughts short by introducing the boy in the worn chair to him. Cutler wasn’t normally shy, but in this instance he did shy back slightly. He wasn’t sure what to say to his new acquaintance, Oliver. He waited to see what the other would do.

Christine hurried upstairs, nearly tripping on the last step. She chuckled nervously, feeling herself redden in embarrassment, "It is this way."

Coughing she picked up part of her dress, trying to regain some bit of grace, so that the well worn edges of the fabric did not trip her up again. The redhead was elated, not only was she home, but she had a new friend. It had been the one concern when she left her temporary home, how would she be able to ingratiate herself back into society? Surely everything and everyone she had known changed while she was gone. The thought of no one recognizing or wanting to be around her if she was recognized, tore at her mind, but she pushed it to the back. Christine was determined, and she would not let 'ifs' get in the way of her happiness.

She led Julie to a small, but well kept room at the end of the hall, "Here it is. You may keep anything you have in that trunk, and I shall have someone move a mirror in here for you," she said kindly. "Well, I leave you to set everything as you like, I think I'll have a stroll about the garden. I do so miss our flowers." With that she closed the door and exited the room, taking care on the stairs (she learned her lesson the first time). As soon as she hit the bottom floor she rushed out the door and around the corner of the house towards the flowery green bushes that lined the walkway to the garden.

Lord Bellings simply stood there for a moment or two, contemplating the words. No doubt this had something to do with Cutler, Anthony's boy that Lord Bellings had only met, what, once? Twice at the most? And on both those occasions, Cutler seemed like an ideal child. Quickly nodding, he headed down the hallway and opened the double wooden doors that led to Anthony's study. Pausing for a moment out of curiousity, to listen what would come next.

Elaine knew her husband was right - how would a sense of morality be instilled in the boy if they simply let incident after incident slip without any discipline? Elaine had always thought he knew better, but for once, she seemed to be wrong. Glancing up at Anthony with soft brown eyes, she found herself speechless. After all, she had been the one to let him go without even attempting to stop him. The reason he was doing who-knows-what out in the darkness of the London streets. "This is my fault," she mumbled, chewing on her bottom lip nervously. Her hands trembled as a cold chill passed over her. "I'm the one who let him go off on his own... said nothing to stop him..."

-----------

Oliver glanced briefly at Cutler, taking in his appearance and offering a terse, "Hello" before returning to his book. Sure, it wasn't every day some wealthy kid showed up and was going to be staying at your house, but this was a really good book and he couldn't seem to put it down. Not to mention he was only two chapters away from the ending.

"Where's your sister?" At which Oliver jerked a thumb towards the second floor. Mr. Cantrell smiled and placed the bundle of bread, meat and strawberries on the table. "What a big help you are, Ol. Keyara! Come down here!"

Keyara hurried down the steps and was almost to the bottom when she caught sight of Cutler. Oh no.. that's not who I think it is... what does he want? She remained where she was, trying her best not to look hurt, despite the fact her eyes were red and puffy from crying when she got home. "Yes, father?"

Anthoney watched as his friend disappeared around the corner and he figured then it was safe to talk as Lord Bellings was surely in the study by now. "No, Elaine, don't blame yourself for Cutler's actions. He's old enough to take account for his actions himself." he took hold of her shoulders gently, trying to calm her down and comfort her. "I should've disciplined him better. But when he comes home that will change. He cannot go on this way any longer." he said resolutely.

Cutler didn't reply to Oliver at all. 'That isn't a way to welcome someone higher than you in rank, who do you think you are anyway?' Cutler thought while only giving Oliver a cold scowl. He certainly wasn't going to be the first one to reply to that. He hung back even more as Mr. Cantrell called to the elusive sister upstairs. He was quite quiet while waiting for the girl to come down, slowly taking in the rest of the poor, little home. His jaw dropped, however, when the girl finally appeared. "That's the pi....g.... who...." he trailed off, glancing over at Cantrell. Was this a joke? A girl that beastly really couldn't live here, could she? Cutler suddenly felt sick and he strongly wished he was at home right now. The temptation of staying away from his father and mother for as long as possible was no longer the issue this house was quickly becoming the least friendly and last place on earth he wanted to be right now.

Jack had run out of things to do, and people to bother. And rum, for that matter. He had happened to know that there was a rumour going around that his little wealthy friend, Christine, was having some sort of party or gathering. Perhaps, she would have rum. Of course, there was the problem of disguising himself.

He had picked out [aka stolen] a rather suitable and fashionable navy coat and found [again, stolen] a pair of expensive leather boots. His hair, of course, was hidden underneath his new brown felted hat.

He glanced at his reflection in the water rather conceitedly before making his way towards Christine's abode. He thought he looked rather dashing, actually. Now if only he could get his hands on some of that rum...

Christine was red in the face she had spent too long outside. She reminded herself not to do so in the future, it would not do to have so many freckles, not to mention she was nearly tan (this thought made her cringe).

There was nothing for it now, but come winter she would be pale and without freckles. She moved on from her looks to realize that she was tired, and hungry, but still happy as a clam that she was home. That was until she spotted Jack. She supposed she should have been happy that she had spotted him before her father or any of the maids caught sight of him. Her brow quirked upward as she saw his new apparel. Even in a fancy get up she could not mistake his tell tale swagger nor his smug smile. She was torn between laughing and running to catch him before he did anything extaordinarily stupid.

In the end, she ran towards him laughing, her mind had decided a draw.

"Jack! What in blazes are you doing here?" She asked, not realizing how much her language had deteriorated during her time away. Her eyes darted nervously about for anyone that might see her with the man, and without a chaperone! She paled; that would be quite a scandal.

"Jack...if this is another one of your ill planned ideas then I suggest you walk away now. And did you not know that when I said I don't want anything to do with you, I meant it?" It did not occur to her then that Jack probably could not understand why any woman could possibly resist him.

Elaine shook her head. "No, Anthony, I could have stopped him if I wanted to, but... I just - I wasn't thinking straight..." But could he blame her? The boy had such nerve to yell back at his mother... and that had been enough to send Elaine over the edge. None of her sisters and brothers would dare have talked back to her own mother and father like that, so what gave Cutler the authority to do such a thing? She ran a hand through her hair and pushed down the locks that had come lose from her bun. "Anthony.. do you think we've been bad parents?" She looked into his eyes with concern.

-----------

Oliver only ignored everything going on around him and kept reading his book. To tell the truth, he didn't care much about the new kid... so he was wealthy and probably attended some refined old school. However, he did listen in to what was going on around him - he had a knack for that... listening in on situations that he had no business hearing. Eavesdropping. Well, it certainly was a skill that came in handy. Most of the town gossip that circulated was by Oliver's hand [or mouth, rather] and he liked secrets. Exposing them, even making money off of people to keep his mouth shut. Oh yes, he had heard many things that should have gone unsaid, and by the very next morning it was the talk of the town.

Mr. Cantrell made a sweeping gesture towards Keyara. "This is my daughter, Keyara... I'm sure you will get along wonderfully." He ignored Cutler's protest and the fact that his daugther looked extremely distraught. "You'll be sharing her room with her, as we've got no extra room." Turning back to Cutler, he spoke in a softer tone, "that's alright with you, eh?"

(woops, I let this totally skip my mind! sorry, Ara! (gee, I cannot believe I did that! :headwall: I love RWTT so much too! *feels bad*)

Anthony shook his head, trying to silence her. He knew his wife and he knew his son. It certainly wasn't his wife's fault this time. "No, it's not your fault, dear." he said, "Cutler just needs to learn some... respect," he ended with a resolute nod. He thought over what Elaine had proposed. His eyes gazing at nothing in particular in the distance. Bad parents? he had never thought he was. He had expectations and he expected his son to meet them. But that was only right and good. It was no good to let your child do whatever he pleased. That only raised spoiled children. "no," he looked down at his wife. "we haven’t been bad parents. Some children need more discipline than others though. And Cutler is growing up and starting to think on his own. I've heard that they're harder to... umm," he cleared his throat, "discipline and set right when they reach his age," he added on the side, although he knew it didn't excuse any of his son's actions.

_______________

The stunned look didn't leave Cutler's face at the sight of the girl standing in front of him. His facial expressions continued to go from shock to horror and back again. He began to seriously wonder if he could bolt for the door and get out of there. The girl's name was Keyara? She had a name? And get along wonderfully? did this man know what kind of a monster she was? He stared at Mr. Cantrell, it took all his strength to keep from laughing out loud and crying at the same time. Sharing a room!? His mind screamed out against this, but his legs and tongue wouldn't move. For one that was a thing unheard of. A boy and girl in the same room and for two... with her? This girl? What? What had happened? Alright with him? No, no it wasn't. Do something, he mentally told himself. Don't just stand there. Sharing the same room with snobby, book-loving quiet boy over there would be better than that.
