This historical costume drama has been out in the UK since the 5th of September, and I still haven't seen it, though I desperately want to! It stars Keira Knightley and Ralph Fiennes as the Duchess and Duke of Devonshire respectively. The trailers look brilliant, and the reviews I've read so far have been very good. Has anyone else seen this movie, or is planning on seeing it? I think it comes out in another month in the U.S.

I plan on seeing this movie. The trailer looks fantastic, is a period movie and Ralph Fiennes is in it :D

How was Keira's acting? I've heard it could rival her performance in Atonement or Pride & Prejudice, both of which I think were two of her best.

I haven't actually seen Atonement or Pride & Prejudice. I read Atonement and it was so boring so I've never bothered to see the film and nothing can beat the BBC P&P.

The only things I've seen her in are Pirates and King Arthur... I loathe King Arthur :explode:

It's hard to compare the Duchess with Pirates seeing as they're so different... However, she was incredibly believable, especially with regards to her role as a mother. My sister and I were both in tears due to it...
And that's all I can really say without spoilers... :D

Seeing her play a mother is something we've never seen. I'm quite excited about it really. How was Fiennes then? He's such a good actor. :)

Ralph Fiennes was amazing. I actually think that it's his performance that makes the film so good. He character seams so in-human but he manges to make him human at the same time... that doesn't really make sense but it's the only way I can describe it...
I'm finding it really hard to discuss their acting without giving away any spoilers....

All the actors were good apart from Dominic Cooper... he just annoyed me... but I think that was partly due to the lack of screen time to build up his character and his relationship to Georgiana
And that's as much as I can say....

*sneaks in*

I actually really hate Dominic Cooper. He is just the most useless thing ever. He was the most horrible Willoughby in the BBC's Sense and Sensibility that could ever have been imagined.

[/end rant]

*sneaks out*

Yeah... he was pretty useless.... The overacting was just.....
:explode:

but I haven't seen him in anything else so I'm willing to give him a fair chance...

It's true what JF is saying. He really butchered Willoughby in the 08 BBC version of S&S. He faired better in Mamma Mia, but I wasn't expecting much out of that film anyway.

Don't worry about spoiling things for me. :P I don't mind being spoiled at all.

Ooh I want to see this film. If only for Ralph Fiennes. I think it just came out yesterday or something. But Ralph Fiennes...I can go on forever with him.

Last I checked it was only in select theaters here, though I don't know why.

The reviews I've read have said that Keira's acting is... not so good. Never saw that one coming. </sarcasm> I might see this, but if I do it'll be because the costumes look interesting, not for the plot or acting.

Hm... strange. I will probably just wait until it's out for rent.

I don't plan on seeing it. The sudden surge in ridiculously period in-correct movies bothers me...that Marie Antoinette was an abomination. And it really frustrates me when they take a perfectly good time period and make the clothing wrong...
But maybe it wouldn't be that bad.

Kudos to Kitoky for the fabulous signature set, and art credit to engelszorn.

I'm generally wary of period films that always seem to revolve around some adulterous affair.

But I will probably see it on DVD... if not for another film emphasizing how much weight Keira's lost in 5 years, then for Ralph Fiennes who never ceases to amaze me.
