That's what I tell everyone! They didn't hire opera singers for the movie and he wasn't really doing broadway-type acting. He is good as a normal singer, just not as an Opera singing guy. I don't think he ABSOLUTELY can't sing. But I agree with you kitoky.

No but you see, Carlotta is supposed to sound like a screeching harpie! She is not supposed to have this awesome opera voice - she is an opera singer and their most famous one, but she is not supposed to be the best one ever. She is just such a diva and the public loves here which is why the opera house still needs her!

I LOVE LOVE LOVE POTO! Its my favorite movie of all time. Gerry was absolutely fantastic. He really immersed himself into the role. Even took singing lessons looong before he got to audition for ALW. When he read the script he turned off the lights, lit some candles, and played the soundtrack to POTO. He said that by the end of reading the script, he had tears running down his neck. He wanted the part so badly, and after he auditioned he went to some play with Joel Schumaacher. GB was a wreck b/c he thought he didn't get the part and wanted to audition a second time.

When filming Dear Frankie, his co-star said he was always singing to his feet during breaks. LOL! And when on the POTO set, he'd get in 'Phantom Mode.' When they were filming scenes without him, he'd watch from dark corners and high up on the scaffolding, just as Erik would have. I love that about GB. He's one of those rare 'character actors.' Like Johnny Depp and Viggo.

Patrick Wilson's voice was beautiful. He had the 'Disney Prince' thing happening, which I totally loved. I loved that he was such a contrast to The Phantom. Raoul's voice was so soothing and comforting. I really loved it. The Phantom's voice was sexy, dangerous, rumbling, full of emotion (we never got to hear Raoul cry when he sang), and had a "rock-and-roll edge" to it, as ALW described it. I love how ALW used such direct contrast b/w the two suitors, making us understand why Christine was so drawn toward The Phantom. Had The Phantom been more "Raoul-like/the perfect opera singer"... WHERE would the distinction b/w the two be? I'm so happy he didn't make their voices mirror copies of each other. That would bore me.

About MC... Personally, I much prefer ALW's movie Phantom. A lot of people don't understand that ALW has always wanted the Phantom to be more like Gerry's Phantom. (Not that he doesn't like MC. LOL!) The movie is not supposed to be like the Broadway Phantom. They're 2 different things. I've discovered that 90-95% of the people who bash Gerry are bashing him just b/c he isn't MC. That is just so silly. Not to mention MC is HOW OLD now? Having him in the role, lusting after a 16 year old girl would be pretty sick.

One thing that bugs me--- okay, 2 things--- but makes me want to laugh at the same time, is when people criticize Gerry's voice when he's doing a scene where he's crying. Think about it. If your heart had just been ripped out of your chest, and you had to SING your pain.... would you hit every note to perfection? No, you would not. I just cannot believe that some people... theatre people even... don't get that. The other thing that I've heard a couple times is people commenting on Patrick/Emmy/Gerry's mouth not being more open when they're singing. The actors themselves have mentioned that that was purposely done. Who wants to see their crowns, fillings and bridgework on a HUGE movie screen? Not me. LOL!

Anyway, kudos to the entire cast. I loved them all. It had to have been difficult trying to match the two performances - singing and acting. It had to have been exhausting.

And Emmy was great. I think she'd make a great Guinevere on the stage.

I agree about how silly it is that people bash him because he isn't Michael Crawford. I would think Michael Crawford [even though it WOULD make him a bleepingheck of a rich guy], would be sick of Phantom of the Opera after 20 years or so.

However, I doubt it would make a difference due to his age. In the original novel Phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux, the Phantom [Erik] was actually estimated to be around 50-60 years old, while Christine and Raoul were in their VERY early 20's. That's 30-40 years apart!

Oh yeah, Book Phantom was definitely older. But Joel Schumacher didn't think that huge an age gap would be such a good idea for a movie audience, especially since he wanted to draw in a younger crowd.

Sorry about the abbreviations. I thought there was an abbreviations guide on here. I was thinking of another board though. I was a bit in Phantom Mode at the time. Okay... more than a bit.

Did Joel Schumacher really want to draw in a younger crowd? I would say that the age factor would be good for some of the younger audiences but the older crowd would want to see it as well, I mean, I have friends who are in their 30's, which they would clobber me if I mentioned their names, and they both expressed that they would rather....have someone who had the more ideal Phantom voice than a younger star. But! If you think about it, the timezone, I estimate that when Madame Giry was young in the flashback, I guessed her to be...oh, maybe, 15 years old -- and by the looks of the Phantom, I'd say he looked around 9-10 years old.

So if Madame Giry was about 40 years old in the present time of the movie, wouldn't Phanny be 35? That's 15 years apart!

At the time of the auction, in 1919, Raoul is 70 years old and Madame Giry is 85. The Phantom is 82. Unfortunately, Christine only lives until age 65.

Christine was born in 1854, making the year she arrives at the opera house 1861. She is 16 years old when she sings "Aria for Elissa" and the story begins. The Phantom is 33 and Raoul is 21.

The Phantom is rescued from his "Devil's Child" cage when he was 9 years old.

Madame Giry is approximately 3 years older than the Phantom.

It is. It's easy to be confused though. That site said "aria for Elissa" b/c Elissa is a character in Hannibal.

It was BEAUTIFUL in theatres. It is definitely a movie to see in theatres. The chandelier scene at the beginning was too powerful for words, and then there was the lair scene which was just too awesome on the big screen. I will never forget the first time I saw the Phantom's big introduction to Christine through the mirror and then as he's leading her down the stair. I kid you not, every single time I saw it in theatres (which was a lot) the audience was mesmerized. You just cannot take your eyes off the screen when Erik takes her down to his lair and sings Music of the Night to her. And I have to say that "Point of No Return" looked and sounded awesome as well.

Yes, I saw it. It was okay... Very, very intense movie. But pretty good.
