So, I just go back from seeing this. I can't really say much without giving too much away, but you all MUST see this film. It is one of the few truly extraordinary pieces of filmmaking I've seen this year. Just... incredible. I don't even know what to say right now. :P

I'm really curious about it, simply for Cate Blanchett who looks gorgeous in the film.

Oh, I've been planning on seeing this for ages. The short story is superb, but I've heard it's hardly the same as the movie. I can't wait to see it. :D

I saw it on Friday and thought it was excellent. Longer than expected (2 hours 45 minutes), but still very good. Brad and Cate were superb - this may be my favorite Brad Pitt role to date. (As a Southerner myself, I also have to throw in that I was especially pleased with their accents. A lot of actors have a tendency to go over-the-top when playing a character from the Deep South.) I was also pleasantly surprised to see Tilda Swinton, who did equally well, even if I was constantly expecting her to offer someone Turkish Delight.

Another thing that amazed me was the special effects. They did an outstanding job of taking the actors through the wide range of ages that their characters were shown at. It made all the amazing acting just that much more believeable.

And Lar, as far as the short story goes, you've heard correctly. It's more just based off the same concept, though there are more than a few nods to the original for the benefit of those who love the story. My friend Taylor and I both read the short story before seeing the movie and were very, very pleased with how they did it. It has all the charm and uniqueness of the original story, just in a more movie-friendly form.

So yeah, needless to say, I highly recommend this movie. It's pretty much made of awesome, and you should all see it.

*could totally be a professional movie reviewer*

pirateoftherings, you get my vote as professional movie reviewer. I might go see it. My cousin and I was suppose to go see it but we didn't make it. I think my sister has seen it and see loved it. So I am going to see it sometime this week.

Really good movie. Romantic, heartbreaking, and bittersweet. Kind of like the ending of the Notebook. You know they'll finally be together again, but it's so freaking sad! And the last shot of the clock being surrounded by water was so poignant.

Oscar worthy, if you ask me. Cate looked freaking gorgeous and oh-so-graceful in this. And Brad Pitt is just all around good looking. ;)

 at the guy who kept telling stories of how he was struck by lightning!

Long movie, but wonderful.

Oh my god. It is such an amazing movie. I thought Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett had such wonderful chemistry together. And Cate was so beautiful in that movie...I wouldn't be surprised if some Oscars came from this.

Now, if I can stop getting a Southern accent from this.

I'm horrible. I still haven't seen this movie. :P At this rate I'll probably just wait till the DVD comes out. Thanks for those who replied to my question about the difference between the movie and the short story. :)

It's definitely an interesting read. It's a nice book to read when you find you haven't got anything else on your list. Didn't take me too long to start and finish it.

Yeah, I saw it in the bookstore the other day, it seems a very short story! :-)
Thanks for your recommendation.

You can read the full story right here, Ea: http://xroads.virginia.edu/~HYPER/Fitzg ... jamin1.htm

And yeah, it's a pretty easy read. You can certainly understand the movie without having read it, but like I said, there are lots of little details for those who have. It made the movie just that much more fun for me, but I also love analyzing and comparing and stuff like that.

So I'd personally recommend reading it, but you're not missing too much if you don't. :)
