The Wrestler.
My love of wrestling not counting. I absolutely adored this. Just simply stunning, powerful, emotional and heartwrenching.
Mickey Rourke is just.....wow. That's all I can manage...wow.
The rest of the cast is great too and Darren Aronofsky deserves some major kudos for making a serious movie about wrestling.
Also...it's super rare that I cry at a movie. But I became so emotionally invested in this movie that I found myself in tears.
Also Also....If Mickey doesn't get at the very least an Oscar nom for this. It'll be a huge huge crime.

i don't know what it is, but i just never totally believe in their characters, and i find them both to be totally devoid of any presence or charisma. plus, neither of them seem to have much range - those who saw mckellen perform in his younger days say he played romeo, hamlet and macbeth exactly the same way, despite the fact that the characters are poles apart; and judi dench always sounds like judi dench.
and i understand what you mean about the language, but his shakespearean speech was heightened even for its day - people in the 16th/17th centuries didn't really talk like that, and it wasn't meant to sounds like everyday talk. if you were to accurately translate shakespeare into modern english, much of it would still have to be in poetic language, so it still wouldn't sound like 'normal' speech.
i have to admit though, i love shakespearean verse. but then, i'm also the only person i know who prefers "sufficient unto the day is the evil thereof" to "today has enough worries of it's own".
Well I've never really seen her in anything, so I can't really say. Although I always believed that generally her and Ian McKellen were meant to be some of the best Shakespearean actors, but everyone is different.
Oh, yes I understand that. But his stories are so good, if they kept the settings as they were meant to be, and tried to keep the atmosphere, I think they could make the language less stuffy, and still stay true to the spirit of the plays.
How the West Was Won - WOOOOOOOOO-HOOOOOOOOO!!! Years! Years I have been waiting to watch this again! And finally it came out on DVD and I snaffled it! Muahuahuahauhauhauha. Pure awesomness. I love westerns, and I don't care that people say it wasn't as good a vehicle for all the glorious stars that were in it - it is one of my favourite westerns, so there.
And I mourn the loss of Cinerama - it was mind-blowing back then, and to have it now with even better technology would just have been . Drat that I was born too late.

The Golden Compass, a few days ago. Pretty good adaptation of a book, I thought (read the entire trilogy a couple of years back) . Hopefully, film adaptations will be made of the other two, despite the fact that this one didn't do very well at the box office.
