For me, it had to be Theoden. Gandalf's death was sad, but I thought that he wasn't really dead (I watched the movies before reading the books). I also think you knew Theoden better than you knew Boromir.

I voted Haldir. I am attached to Haldir...

I quite agree that there is something very WRONG in seeing a dead Elf... espcially if he happens to be one of your favourite charries.

For me is was Gandalf, even though I'd recently read the book and knew what was going to happen, but argh the music and Frodo and no more Gandalf, Gandalf wasn't there to make everything better again!

I think it's very hard to choose between Gandalf and Theoden. The music surrounding Gandalf's dead was really emotional, but the scene with Theoden en Eowyn was also very emotional, and I really like how Eowyn shows at the same time how strong and how emotional she can be.

Haldir more than the others. I suppose because his appearance was unexpected.

Also Boromir. I really liked him and it was unecspected and very sad. Especially Boromir died in most heroic way for me.

I though Haldir's death was the saddest because he didn't have the chance to pass over the sea to Valinor. CRY!!!!
Bye!

I would probably go for Theoden.
Gandalf and Boromir were strong competitors, but Theoden's death happened on a battlefield that had been completely laid waste, in front of a falling city, and after a battle that had seemed to be going nowhere for Men.
Theoden made a great speech (if it can be called that!) and Eowyn being there made it even sadder.

Boromirs. His ending was pretty tragic.

While they all made me equally sad, I'm sure there's some Valhalla like place for men who die in battle that they go to. So, while it does make me sad... it's more like a viking sad. In Boromir's case... it made him regain his honour, which never makes me sad.

I watched the movies when I was young, so I had not read the books yet. When Gandalf died, I cried. Hard. And continued to mourn over it until he lived again. I also cried when Boromir died, and when Haldir died. I think seeing the emotional connections between the characters (Boromir telling Aragorn he would have followed him until the end, etc) makes it even more emotional for me. I felt like I was losing family members.

All of them are sad. But I voted Gandalf. The music really gets to me, as well as the faces and reactions of Aragorn and Frodo.

No one's death made me very sad... My eyes watered a little bit when Boromir died... so I guess him. He was one of my favorite characters.
