Frera nodded her head. "I'll be fine. Don't worry about me." She answered politely as she returned to stirring the stew, reducing the gravy. She listened for their retreating steps before allowing her shoulders to sag. Frera was weary. Too long had she kept up this charade of the happy widow. She longed to have her husband beside her, help her get through this. She could not bear losing both her husband and son in the same blow. Her eyes came to rest on an old picture of Thoril's father. "What do you think, my love?" She asked quietly, rolling her eyes.

Thoril led Callie into the dining room and took three plates from the side table. "How are you feeling?" He asked Callie, raising his brow.

Callie's eyes studied the wood table, focusing in on the grain of the wood. "Fine." she whispered. Liar, her mind accused. There was something almost unaccepting in Frera's gaze when she looked at her. Inside Callie's mind, she wondered what she had done wrong. Had she done anything wrong? Of course, Frera had experienced a great loss recently. Callie scolded herself. "Selfish little brat, Callie.." she muttered quietly, hardly even realizing she had spoken out loud.

"You must forgive my mother. She does not mean to be so cold. She never used to be this cold. I guess she is just frightened of losing me to such a wonderful woman." He came to stand behind Callie, folding his arms around her. "She will come round my love. She is just putting you through your paces. Believe me you have not failed one test. You are kind. You are beautiful, smart and helpful. What more could a mother want for her son?" Thoril smiled softly. "You are certainly not selfish."

Frera stood behind the door, listening to Thoril's conversation. She was surprised at how well her son knew her. He knew full well what she was afraid of. He knew that Frera could find no fault in Callie. She was truely wonderful. She seemed to make Thoril light up in a way Frera had never seen before. Frera returned her gaze to the picture of Thoril's father. "I know, I know," she said as though carrying on a conversation in her mind. "I'll stop being so hard on her. I'll apologise..." she sighed softly as she pushed the door open. "Callie? Would you mind helping me bring the plates through please?" She asked politely with a smile.

She sighed and leaned back into Thoril's arms, letting him be her strength for the moment. She wanted to object to his words, to tell him she had many faults; but she couldn't. "Thank you." she whispered, closing her eyes.

When Frera called to her, she jumped, her eyes flying open. "Of course!" she said in an almost rushed voice.

Thoril raised his brow at his mother, his arms folded tightly across his chest. His eyes were stern and cold. It was a warning. A warning that Frera picked up on immediately. Her brow arched in surprise at Thoril's stance. Thoril wavered momentarily, offering his mother an apologetic smile. Frera grimaced, retreating into the kitchen.

She waited patiently until the door was closed. "I want to apologise Callie...For being so hard on you. I don't mean to be..." Her eyes strayed to the photograph on the window sill. "I am happy for the two of you. I really am." She turned to face Callie, holding a plate laden with food.

Callie stopped short. "Frera...I mean..ma'm...you really have nothing to apologize for. I..." she had to break a moment, putting the words together. "I know that you have suffered great loss, and that you only seek to protect your son. Therefore, I must apologize for my shortcomings." she dipped her head out of respect for Frera.

"I may not be the type of woman you expected or even wanted Thoril to bring home; yet I assure you. I am not trying to steal him away from you, and I do not wish for you to feel as though you are losing him as well." she whispered.

"It is not that you have shortcomings Callie," Frera sighed softly. "You are just the kind of woman I wanted for my son. You see...when you become a mother you imagine what partner you would love your child to pick. Thing is you tend to make this partner too wonderful, too magnificent. Therefore anyone that your child does bring home, will fail miserably and it won't hurt so much when your child leaves...because you know in your heart they will see the flaws and come back home to you." Frera sighed heavily. "Unfortunately I see in you, all the qualities I wanted my son to find. Thoril sees them in you too. Thoril will never return home to me." Frera handed a plate to Callie. "You shouldn't take notice of me dear...I'm just a silly rambling old woman..." She grinned to Callie before disappearing into the dining room.

Callie stared down at the plate. She walked out of the room, her brows furrowed. "Frera..she said to the woman's back, "You are not a silly old woman, you are a loving mother. I can understand your worries..." she fell silent after that, nit sure what to say as she set the heaping plate on the table.

Frera settled a hand on Callie's shoulder. "Lets not talk about it anymore. I believe we have an accurate understanding of one another. I think it best to start fresh and go on from here." Frera smiled softly as she took her seat at the head of the table. She glanced at the empty seat facing her. With a sigh she fixed her napkin on her lap and waited for her company to do the same.

Thoril raised his brows at Callie. "Everything alright?" he mouthed, risking a glance at his mother. "Tuck in," she announced, ladelling stew onto her plate.

Callie nodded, then looked at the food on get plate, suddenly losing her appetite. Sorrow radiated from this poor woman, and Callie felt helpless. Her fork rose in her hand, only to push the food around.

Thoril ate from his plate pleasently. Perhaps his mother had taken his warning seriously. He glanced at Callie again and noticed she wasn't eating. Something was upsetting her. Thoril could only think it was his mother. He glanced to his mother, who was eating in silence, her eyes cast down to her plate. "Not hungry Callie?" He asked, glancing over at Callie again.

"Oh don't force yourself to eat, dear. You can always come back to it later...Do you want me to fix you something else?" Frera asked, raising from her seat.

"Oh! No, please, this is amazing...I am probably just tired.." she smiled weakly, then began to eat, feeling suddenly awkward. She watched her fork as it rose and fell, blinking back confused thoughts.

"We can have dinner later if you are tired Callie." Thoril stated. "We can go and take a lie down if you like? It was an incredibly long journey. I am sure my mother would not mind us disappearing for a while. I am sure we have intruded on her peace long enough for one evening." He flashed a smile at his mother.

Frera returned his smile. "Please do not keep yourself up on my account. I would much rather you rested. We have a long day ahead of us tomorrow anyway."

Callie hesitated. "Perhaps...perhaps that would be good..I am terribly sorry.." she sent an apologetic look to the both of them. "I can go rest, if you two would like to visit more, please do!" she had eaten most of her food, but she stood anyway.

Frera stood with her. "I have changed the sheets in my bedroom. There are fresh towels in the cupboard. I took the liberty of buying some nightware for you. Feel free to use what you need." She smiled to Callie. "What is mine is yours." She looked to Thoril. "Your room is the same as always off course. Do either of you want a cup of tea or cocoa to take with you?" She asked gliding over to the kitchen door.

Thoril smiled at his mother's hospitality. Off course she would offer up her own bed. He approached her and kissed her cheek. "Thank you for the offer mother, but I believe Callie and I have exhausted enough of your hospitality for one evening. You should rest. Put your feet up. I will deal with the dishes in the morning." He kissed his mother on the head before leading Callie to the stares.

"Sweet dreams," Frera smiled, bowing her head before beginning to clear up.

"Thank you, Frera, so much." Callie sent the older woman a grateful smile before allowing Thoril to lead her up the stairs. Her thoughts were still whirling. what can I do for her? If anything, to try and make her feel better? she thought. She blinked her eyes wearily, beginning to feel the affects of the journey and the long nights she hadn't slept while Thoril had been away.

"I like your mother." she said softly.
