He is a demigod though. It makes sense that he would believe that nothing could really stop him, even if there were a few minor hindrances. He would see the whole place as easily conquerable.

I understand that, and that was part of the spectacle, seeing a demigod-like individual suddenly faced with people he thought beneath him who can stand up to him, if not outright beat him. Getting thwarted over and again and seeing a look of outright confusion blossom on his face was part of his charm. And the final icing on the cake was at the end, with Thor taking him back home both bound and gagged.

Don't get me wrong, I love the character, I just love what was done to him more.
