So, Sam Gamgee. A gardener. Loyal friend. Loves poetry. Smart? Ignorant? Intelligent? Clumsy?
This is a thread to discuss anything and everything Sam. You Sam fans, post away!

I am huge HUGE Sam fan! I think he is my fave character in whole Middle-Earth He went through hard way in FotR. He was naive and clumsy and I didn't take him serious at the first time. But later he started to grow in me and I fell in love!

In FotR...he was almost not seen. His appereance was more felt in two other books. But he was adorable at the beginning of the book, so different than in RotK.

I'm continuously intrigued by the dynamic between all the hobbits at the beginning as opposed to the end (how Frodo relies on Merry, the very servant relationship of Sam, etc) and the last time I reread it I started taking notes about it. (Yes, I am a nerd.) Sam's not really present as a full member of the group, not until Crickhollow. Then we start to see more of him as the "chief investigator" of the group. And then he saves the day! I was amazed when I was reading about the old forest - Pippin, Merry, and Frodo all start to fall asleep because of Old Man Willow. And Sam says it's unnatural and manages to shake it off. Go Sam! It's after that that we start to see Sam get more respect from the others, and then he pulls out random bits of song and poetry, and all in all we get to see quite a development.

Yes, you got it, Nurr. Sam grows in the eyes of rest of the hobbits, they more and more rely on him. I think it's like with Bilbo, that simple hobbit that seemed almost unnecessary for the journey, starts to be precious companion.

Just a question, i know it has been posted before already, but do you think that Sam would have pushed Frodo into the Fires of Mount Doom after Frodo claimed the ring if Gollum hadn't intervened? Would he have known the danger and evil that that ring possesed? Would his loyalty and love for Middle-Earth over-ride his loyalty and love for his Master Frodo?

That's interesting question. He did all that he did mainly for Frodo - he wanted to help him, he didn't want to leave him, he wanted to save him from Shelob and so on. His love for Frodo may overhelm him in that case.

But he wa aware, to a certain extend, that the ring was dangerous; especially if kept for a longer time.. He witnessed how miserable gollum was because of the ring..

I definitely think that Sam is a hero He went through so much and risked his life for Frodo and the cause. Concerning the situation of whether he would have pushed Frodo into the fire...? I'm not sure. Yes, he knew the dangers of the ring, but like it's been mentioned here; his love for Frodo may have stopped him. Hm...its a 50/50 situation for me But I think I'm leaning toward Sam doing the right thing in the end (Destroying the ring). But there's no real way of knowing is there? Haha

Yes because after Frodo was stung by Shelob and Sam thought that he was dead, he did decide to abandon Frodo and carry on the journey to destroy the ring. I don't know

Well, he is almost invisible in FotR...his true life in these books begins with Frodo breaking up Fellowship. Then he grows into a hero we all know. BUt at the same time, hobbits were strongly attached to Sam. They were maybe closer to each other because Sam was "only" a gardener but I think they counted on him just like on Frodo or other "higher-class" hobbit in the Fellowship.
