I just want to ask, what exactly is the A-U family tree? Also, how do the contests work, like which one is running now?

The contests...well, basically if it's been posted in August, it's probably running unless it says "Voting Closed" in the title. There can be multiple running at one time, and as long as there's no voting thread up for it, it's usually still open. Anyone can start their own contest, and it can really be about anything (except bashing). There's a guidelines post you could always look at too.
