Has anyone else seen this?
I saw it today and I thought it was good.
I still prefere the BBC version but I thought Keira and Matthew were suprisingly good in their roles. Still not as good as in the BBC verison but still good.
All the Bennett sisters were good even if Jane didn't really seem shy - would we really have known that she was if Lizzy hadn't said? Mrs Bennett was quite good less OTT than in the BBC version which I'm not sure whether is a good thing or not. Mr Collins was also less OTT and I think definitly worse. I didn't like Mr Bennett either he had lost most of his wittiest lines and didn't even put across the ones he did have very well.
Oh and Mr Bingley was terrible he had neither intelligence or any good looks. The only thing in his favour was his love of Jane and his money.
But appart from these complaints I think they did very well adapting it into a 2 hour film. It was nesesary to miss out bits and skim over other things but they got the general idea of the story - even without the looks over the pianno between Lizzy and Darcy - and the strength of the main characters made up for other misscast characters.

The BBC version is the one with Colin Firth - the perfect version
But it is interesting to see the new film especailly how they managed to fit the story into 2 hours.
Oh and the balls were better than the BBC version the characters actually looked as if they were enjoying themselves dancing. The way they shut everyone else out when Lizzy and Darcy were dancing was very effective.

I thought it was good- but nothing I'll remember as a really good film. I wouldn't reccomend it to anyone but it did have a bit more humor that in the BBC one. But Mr.Bingly! Omg! He had crazy ginger hair!!?(lol nothing wrong with ginger hair it just did NOT suit mr bingly!) And he was not handsome. Crispin Bonham-Carter was soooooo handsome as him in the BBC version which was exelllent. Overall id give it like 5/10...

You lucky, lucky girl! It doesn't come out in America until November; otherwise I would have seen it by now.
Can't wait!

I'm also in America, so I have to wait to see it too. I've loved pretty much every version I've seen of Pride and Prejudice, though my favorite was a B&W one.

I LOVE Pride and Prejudice! The A&E (aka BBC version) is the best adaptation I've seen, although the new one with Keira Knightley is good, too. It's a little more openly romantic than the A&E one, but it's still good.

I like both too! I honestly didn't think Keira could pull off Elizabeth, but she did quite well! I love Darcy... but of course a lot of that is because I first loved Collin Firth's version of him. : )
I think I'm the only one who liked Bingly though! I dunno why I do, there was just something about him. *shrugs*

I actually liked him fine. He was portrayed a little differently than in A&E's, but he was still a very good character. My sister LOVES Bingley!

Arwen is probably sick and tired of hearing my opinion on this subject, but I really can't resist
The movie was better than I expected, I'll admit that... and believe me, my expectations were quite low.
I did not detest Keira Knightley or Matthew McFayden as I thought I would, in fact, I thought most of the faults were in the writing/direction.
I felt that the story was flat. I understand that it is extremely difficult to take such a complex book and condense it into a 2-hour timeslot, but they could have done better. All the important plot points were there, but to me, it felt as if there was little depth. Seldom did one see the actual reasons for things... for example, why did Lizzy finally fall in love with Darcy? (yes, I do know this answer, but only from watching the BBC version and reading the book). For a person who does not know the story of Pride and Prejudice, they would probably leave the theater questioning at what point Lizzy finally fell in love with him, and her reasons for it... was it for his money? Isn't this supposed to be one of the greatest love stories in literature?
I believe that Lizzy's heart was softened toward Darcy after reading his letter after his first proposal... and that turned to love when she visited Pemberly--not because of the grandness of Pemberly, but because she sees him in his natural environment, with the people he loves best. She sees his love and devotion to his sister and the way he treats even his housekeeper, and she begins to see him in a new light. Georgiana is barely mentioned, and there is no indication of the kind of relationship she has with her brother.
I know that character interpretation varies from reader to reader, but some characters were inexcuseable off. Mr Collins, for example, is supposed to be a pompous idiot, who is determined to make the world think he is this wonderous holy being, while really just being seen as a fool by everyone. The parts with Mr Collins in the book are (in my opinion) some of the funniest parts, dripping in sarcasm and wonderful Jane Austen wit. The movie version of Mr Collins was merely nervous and short... not so much personality flaws (Jane's favorite topic of ridicule) but human shortcomings. To me, in the movie, he was a character to be pitied rather than laughed at.
While not as important to me as the depth of the plot, the farm irked me so much. The Bennets were not farmers! (what was with the pig walking through the house?!?!?) Austenblog.com called the Bennets the "Longbourne Hillbillies," and I thought this was an accurate description. The Bennets are supposed to have a certain "lack of propriety," but they aren't completely uncivilized and unrefined. Mr Bennet is a gentlemen, and his children gentleman's daughters. Their faults were just exaggerated and blown out of proportion. Along the same lines, if the Bennets had been living on a farm, letting a giant pig wander freely through their house, they would not have even been at the same party as the likes of the Bingleys or the Darcys. Their social circles would never have crossed, save for one of the Bennet girls being a maid in one of their households.
Despite all the impurities I found (:P) it wasn't all bad. I quite liked both proposal scenes (what can I say, I'm a romantic). I thought Darcy looked extremely handsom striding through the mist, pursuing his love with his shirt slighly open and his manly black cloack billowing behind him. And, in spite of myself, I liked the extremely cheesy but sweet ending scene.
Again, these are just my opinions. If you liked it, good for you... you aren't as nitpicky as I am!

Well, I haven't seen the new one yet. I know I should - but I'm almost frightened to see it because I LOVE the book and the BBC/A&E version. I have to agree with Bellethiel about the story. The "impurities" that she found are what worried me, but they can't get EVEYTHING into 2 hours. So, I may just have to suck it up and go. Besides, it's playing at the coolest theatre where I live! Yay!

Oh, another thing I liked... I really liked the music. I thought it added a lot (and compensated for some ) and it was just very pretty. The movie itself was very pretty, the scenery and everything... though I'm not quite sure if the costumes were historically accurate (my cousin says they're not) but please correct me if I'm wrong.

Okay. I just saw Pride and Prejudice last night.
Oh. My. God.
Any doubts I had about it are gone and all I can think about is Mr. Darcy. Ha ha ha. I think they did a wonderful job. Especially getting in all they could in two hours. It was all very beautiful. Part of my reason for being so, well, I don't know...was Keira Knightly. Rest assured I don't have anything against her - it's just I can't see her as Lizzy. But I just ignored the fact that it was Keira and enjoyed. REALLY enjoyed it. The guy who played Mr. Darcy was AMAZING! (Though I still have a prejudice for Colin . . . this guy was GREAT) Larien and I decided that it MUST be a requirement for any man who plays Darcy to look like a very sad hurt puppy. It was great. At the end of the movie I just sighed and was like damn Jane Austen for being a genius and reinforcing the fact that I'm a complete hopeless romantic. Ah, it was beautiful!
Oh, and Bingly. What to say about him. He was great. EVERY time he was on screen I'd burst out laughing. It was as if Paul Bettany and Conan O'Brian mated. He was their offspring. The hair. Oh, the hair. So brilliant.
Oh! And the seen with the letter Lizzy gets about Lydia. I BURST out laughing. Now, let me explain myself. Yes, it was SILENT in the theatre (well, after Darcy tries to sit down but ends up jumping back up) but when she walks in the first time . . . she was like laughing and before I could stop myself the words: "WHAT the hell?!" escape from my mouth. The last 2 words were muffled by laughter. And then she walks around again and is bawling...sort of. I just thought it was a ridiculous bit of acting. But when we got back, Larien looked it up and found out that the first time she goes through, the letter actually says: "Don't laugh." Which in fact makes her laugh, but they thought no one would catch it. Except me! Ha ha ha!
All in all - I thought it was amazing! And cheers for all Mr. Darcy's that look like sad puppies!

I've seen it! I've seen it! If anone should be interested, hehe.. You people are so lucky! It wasn't resleased here until January 6th! I think it was good! Not really like amazingly good, but they got some fine things pulled in. but I must say that the BBC verion definitely is my favourite. Who does not love Colin Firth?!
the thing that annoyed me the most was mr. Bennet!! Donald Sutherland?! I mean - come on! I hate his voice and he was not very amusing. The sisters were cast well I think. Something was missing about Jane though. I didn't think it was clear enough that she was meant to think so well of everyone.
Many of you seem not to like Mr. Bingley - I loved him! So incredibly sweet! okay, maybe he didn't seem very bright now I think about it, but cute he was! I liked Darcy as well
ONE QUESTION: Is mr. Bingey allowed to just walk into the room where Jane is lying in the bed and is ill? NO, right? What was that?!
