I loved the way it was written, with like, hardly any dialogue, and how it's written in a similar way to the bible(once again, no offence) and how it doesn't describe anything, but you still get pictures clearly in your head...it's just amazing!

Yeah, it's just like the old bed-time storieds. I've always wanted to memorise the tale of Beren and Luthien, and then if i ever have a kid (don't count on it, lol) I'd tell them that. Not word for word obviously, but it's just such a beautiful tale.

Yeah wouldn't it be great to tell stories to children orally like this? Really, it's a shame that all the old lore is lost... We should all sing/tell stories like Beren and Luthien to the kids instead of all these dumb things people come up with... :)

I've always loved the idea of telling things like the lay of Beren and Luthien to children... teaching them to love good story, language, and also the plain ol' fashioned morals to be found in them is something that needs to be brought back... :) And it also would hopefully make ready-made Ringers by the time they're grown. :P

Totally! Tolkien's work is too beautiful; it can't just be forgotten...
I don't want kids, but when my friends have children, I'll tell them the story of Beren and Luthien and read the Hobbit! :D

Hey yeah, that's a good idea, i don't particularily want kids, but i'm sure i'll have a neice or a nephew!
And I've always wanted to you know, have a song for everything. Rather than actually telling the story to sing it, because it's so much more..i don't know, you have to put more effort into it, there fore you enjoy it more.

I love the Sil. It's a fanastic tale. especially for Ringers like myself (and all you guys) I must say, the first time i tried to read it, got about 100 pages in an found it like wading through treacle^^ but I went back to it after a while, and really enjoyed it. It was great to find out what happened during the first age, and before.

The tale of beren and Luthien really touches me every time I read it. And I would love to be able to tell it to my children, should I ever have any. It would be great to tell it as the Lay of Leithian. And it's such a shame that much of the English lore has been lost over the years. We shall have to use Tolkien to replace it^^

I don't wanna have children, but I think I'll have nephews and neices and I think I'll tell them some stories from the Sil, I think they contain many important things like friendship and love, but also despair and so on

The Sil is definately a great book!

I would recommend one thing to you though.
They throw a lot of names, places, events, and dates at you, and it may be difficult to remember EVERYTHING. I suggest a small notebook, when a new name comes a long, write it down, write a little something about him/her, and most importantly state as many family realations as you know (father of, mother of, daughter of etc.) Even if the person seems small.

Don't make it a big thing, but it'll help keep thigns in order in yuor mind.

^I completely agree.

I realized that it was a history more than a story, but I still didn't find it boring. You learn so much, and when you think about it, all the stories are woven together. Tolkien did a marvelous job with it. If you haven't read the Sil, there's still so much you don't know about Middle Earth. It's all shown there: the tragedy of Feanor, the malice of Morgoth, and the love of Luthien and Beren. It really is a collection of beautiful tales. :)

I totally agree with ya Mrs.Gamgee I also did that when I reread the Sil. I agree with ya too Th'wayla. the story always remembers me of Tolkien and Edith.

* agrees with Mrs. Gamgee* I took some notes while reading the Sil too. At first, I was confused with the genealogy of Elves so I drew trees so I could remember all the families.

yes it helped me a lot, because I don't have to remember everything now. When I first read it I was quite confused. Then I read it with the index and an atlas of Middle-earth next to me and took notes and now it's fine.
