That's not really from the Silmarillion, but oh well.
Bandobras Took (tall enough to ride a horse), of the Shire, knocked the head off the chief orc of a band that invaded the Shire some long years before the events in The Hobbit, and it fell down a rabbit hole, and the game of golf was invented.
What place of note originally had a silver roof that eventually turned to black?
