i don't know about the book but in the movie i believe there were wings but the balrog couldnt use them at all. it could be that the balrogs of old could use their wings to fly. i remember balrogs being mentioned in the earlier battles in the Silmarilion but i dont think it says anything about flying...

Regardless of whether they had wings or not, I seriously doubt Balrogs could Fly.

Maybe Balrogs have wings for decoration or if they get to hot, they can easily fan themselves with it.

What if there was a version of Balrog that was cold instead of made of flame? How would it keep itself cold?

Yeah!!! are on my brainwave. So how would it keep sufficiently cold enuff?
