Well, no offense anyone, but I find it very hard to concentrate when there is rap music going on. And the lyrics are a bit hard to comprehend, which upsets me because I like the lyrics in a song. But I don't mind it a lot, particularly if it is the only thing playing in a party or something.

Thanks Wenchy, I appreciate it.

I just don't understand why people get so upset when someone else says they don't like the same music as them. Music is a personal thing, at least it is for me, nothing anyone says or does will change my opinion on it, or hurt my feelings.

I can't understand that either. People like different kinds of music. From an overall perspective, there is no such thing as "good" or "bad" music, it's just music. When it comes to taste there is no right or wrong so I honestly don't see why people get so upset when you say you don't find a certain type of music pleasing to your ears.

^ Very well said- I couldn't agree more. Or when people don't appreciate the music I like- as in they look down upon it. Music is completely a personal thing, no one can have the exact same interests as another really. So I don't think anyone should take offense to opinions like that- after all, who really cares if a bunch of people don't like the same stuff as you, no matter what you listen to?

Well if you're referring to me, I don't like rap either, so I'm not a valid example. I was just simply saying that you don't see anyone who likes rap here run around insulting rock. It's all about respect and how you present things. Nobody's forcing you to like or hate anything or change your opinions on things.

Like a few posts back when I quoted Eru... the way she presented it was less harsh and more of the truth... if you know what I mean. Some people will say something like "Oh, I don't like rap because of the lyrics." which is completely invalid because there's no set or specific lyrics written out for rap music. So yeah, that's my say on it.

Well, HoL, keep in mind that no one's forcing you to be offended by anything either (and I am not pointing fingers).

Phoenix makes such a good point. I think rap's yucky, but I don't care if other people like it...as long as they aren't blasting it in my vicinity. <G>
I can understand feeling defensive when people bash your favorite music...I think we'd all be lying if we said it never bothers us. But when it comes right down to it, it isn't really all that necessary. There's no accounting for taste, right? :P

For a person who doesn't like rap you're sure being pretty defensive about it. All people have done is express their opinions about a music genre, since that is what this thread was all about. If such opinions offends you, then why even enter such a thread? This forum is pretty much shielded from intense arguments and harsh extensive debates but that doesn't mean people can't discuss things they don't like. If a person doesn't like a certain type of music because of the lyrics then that is very much a valid opinion AND argument, however somebody just saying "RAP SUCKS" without even giving a reason as to why not is not a valid argument. Not liking a certain genre of music because of the lyrical content is really no different from not liking a certain types of films because of the content. No opinion is invalid! Instead of tiptoeing around people because you might offend them, why don't we all just respect everyone's right to have an opinion, to voice that opinion and to be recognized for that opinion?!

I was pretty much saying the same thing as Phoenix and I agree with her to 100%.

Really? So who made this post then?

Haldir o Lórien wrote:
I like Rap, Hiphop and R&B ... I hate it when people criticise it it like that... no respect for other peoples' preferences at all ... I like all kinds of music and those three as well so it kinda annoys me when people say they hate it... why is a thread with outright bashing allowed here anyway? it clearly insults Rap... "who here doesn't like rap...?" okay well can you be any less specific? good lord, people these days ... how would any of you take it if i started a thread "who here doesnt like rock...?"

What you think I didn't read the whole thread?

For the record, I agree with you about respect. But you have to also respect others opinions and views on how they see things. It works both ways. My post was a generalisation about how I see things, it wasn't aimed at anyone in particular.

If Poster A chose to make a thread about how they didn't like Rock or Metal, I honestly wouldn't care. No-one forces anyone to read every single thread about every single thing. You don't like a particular thread, you simply ignore it. Don't post on it. Forget it exists, because in the long run what you like is your own personal choice and nothing anyone can say can change that.

So that is why you were basically personally attacking Jo in the other thread when she said she didn't like what's popular today?

You also said you don't like rock but you like metal? Metal is rock.
Decide what's your opinion and stick to it!

Breathe girl, breathe. Let's not bring up the other thread, okay? It's locked and over. If you have any problems with it (which I'm not sure why you would.. you had no part in it...) then PM me and we'll settle it.

Okay Metal is called metal because it's different from rock. I like metal, but not rock, why does it seem like you're trying to stop me? It's pretty obvious what I mean. Just beacuse I like metal, it doesnt mean that I HAVE to like rock as well. Comprendo?

I have no problem with my breathing. I'm having a discussion with you as I feel some of your posts have been contradicting to eachother.

I do have a problem with the other thread. I consider Jo a friend and she was insulted and attacked for absolutely no reason. But yeah, let's forget that ever happened. As you said, it's locked and over [/sarcasm].

Metal is a sub-genre of rock. Rock is an incredibly huge genre with a gazillion sub-genres, anything from disco to pop came from rock. Since rock music is so broad, saying you like or dislike rock music is about the equivalent of saying you like or don't like movies. There's nothing wrong with liking or disliking it, that's not the problem here, but what you're saying is something like "i like fantasy movies, but i don't like movies". If that's your opinion, fine, who am I to judge, it's just a tad bit contradicting that's all.

YES! They are so full of cussing that it's almost unintelligent. You'd think those were the only words in their vocabulary. :orly:

I don't care much for rap. :wary:

"Their"? By saying "their" are you speaking for rappers in general? Because that is completely bull. Look up the meaning of "rap" and tell me what you get. Does it mention anything about "cussing" and "lyrics"? No. It mentions how it derived from African American people and it is a good form of music. It was only recently abused by some of the modern-day rappers but you can't say that it's unintelligent because it is NOT.

Quote:
rap4 (rp) Pronunciation Key Audio pronunciation of "Rap" [P]
n.

1. Slang. A talk, conversation, or discussion.
2.
1. A form of popular music developed especially in African-American urban communities and characterized by spoken or chanted rhyming lyrics with a syncopated, repetitive rhythmic accompaniment.
2. A composition or performance of such music.

intr.v. rapped, rap·ping, raps

1. Slang. To discuss freely and at length.
2. To perform rap music.

:hiya: I didn't say "their", I said "they are"... and I was referring to 90% of the popular rap today. Believe me, I'm not a total rap hater, it's just that throughout the history of rap... the majority of the songs have a prevelent amount of cussing. And *I* believe that perpetual cussing shows a lack of intelligence; it is substituting original, descriptive words with overused slang.

There are some cool/interesting/likeable rap's for me; but the majority of it I have absolutely no care for.

I love his satiric lyrics :bounce:

Dudette, absolutely! Weird Al turns rap into something creative and original; I absolutely adore those. For instance... "It's All About the Pentiums." That song has intriguing beat, witty lyrics, and original humor. Not to mention the computer-technology references. :laughbounce:

I am calm and was perfectly calm when I wrote the post. You say one thing, but then you turn around and say something else because it suits you.
Complete contradiction. If that was your opinion then why not state that in the first place?

No it doesn't mean you have to like it. But you are doing what you say you don't like other people doing, and that's generalising about a specific genre of music.
All rock is not the same. All Metal is not the same. Yet you tar all rock with the same brush.

Out of curiosity. What metal bands do you like?

In addition to Phoenix's last question I'd also like to know what rock music is to you? What bands or types of rock music do you associate the genre with? I'm just curious since it's probably the broadest genre within music that it's such a generalization to group them all together!

Rock can be generalized.
If you don't like rock, you won't like anything under it.

I'm a big Metal Fan I listen to varieties of it.
Power Metal,Thrash Metal, ect ect
However if someone doesn't like it then let it be.

See that's where you're all wrong :)
Metal and rock are two different genres of music...there is a reason why rock is called rock, with different classifications such as classic rock, pop rock, hard rock, etc.
Metal however has its own classifications also, such as heavy metal, death metal, black metal, thrash metal, classic metal, etc.
So what do YOU call it, heavy rock metal or heavy metal rock or death rock or black rock or...what?

Let's see.
Could you group, say...Mayhem and Belphegor in the same category as Queens of the Stone Age and The Used?

If you could please explain to me how you can possibly say metal is a kind of "rock", just because they both use the same instruments doesn't make them the same thing.
