Hmm I wonder if Paolini did steal some ideas. But now everyone's gonna be bashing Eragon. :annoyed2:

As a very avid writer, I can say this: Christopher Paolini apparently doesn't even know what origionality means.

Usually I'm not into bashing things at all, but I can't help but say that yes, he ripped off of just about every famous fantasy or sci-fi out there. I realize (once again as an avid writer) that there is no way to write a fantasy without at least some similarities to other things (LotR especially). But why did he have to borrow just about everything?

Also, he's a terrible writer. I have a lot of friends who can write better. Every writing expert I've ever heard has said that Eragon is terribly written, and I have to agree.

So why do I like it still?... Well, I guess what it comes down to in the end is that it's fantasy with a plot that's just interesting enough to keep me involved. Eragon is kind of fun, though I laugh a lot of it off. Christopher Paolini needs writing lessons. Badly.

I don't particularly mind the way he writes. He writes for children. :\
If I can still read it, it must be okay....that sounds a tad conceited.
Obviously if you begin comparing things with LotR, then you're gonna getgarbage.
Also remember, Tolkien wasn't a writer, he was a linguist, which is a reason he writes the way he does.

But this is getting off topic, when they make Eldest, I plan on going in costume. :]
and Murtagh is begininng to appeal to me. :]

^ But that's the thing, every time I read interviews with him where the interviewer asks about his influences, he does NOT mention Tolkien! Darn you Christopher, if you're going to use a lot of Tolkien's ideas, at least give him some credit as an influence! :grr: *ahem* sorry. </rant>

Well, to be perfectly honest, after doing some research, I found that in a few interviews he does list Tolkien as an inspiration, but on equal footing with several other authors. So, I take it back that he doesn't credit Tolkien at all.

However, on his "official biography," he lists lots of favorite books growing up and he lists things like Phillip Pullman and Brian Jacques, but no Tolkien, and then on Shur'tugal's exclusive Q&A with him, well...

I read in an article that you like Tolkien. Did his books help inspire you with Eragon?

I enjoyed Tolkien's world of hobbits, elves, and dwarves, and the epic quest of the ring. Like Tolkien, I also drew inspiration from Nordic, Old English, and Icelandic sagas.

That...that...

:explode:

He didn't answer the question, and it kinda irks me that he's setting himself on Tolkien's level...sorry...I really do like the Inheritance books... :erm:

Oh, I didn't know that. That...stinks. He copied, like half of the stuff in his books from Tolkien! I mean, not that I blame him for doing that, but deemphasizing this fact and not giving Tolkien credit is unfair. Totally unfair.
Plus, he's talking like he felt somewhat superior to Tolkien's work. Like he thinks that his books are the better ones. :confused2:
I do like Eragon, too, but you just can't say that the story is something very new.

But of course, I dont think that the Ancient Language he made up isnt a full language right? I mean, he just made up a few phrases and all to go along with the book, while Tolkien did write real languages, Elvish and such. :teehee:

Hmm. I think you're all being a bunch of ninnies. I've always thought he's wise for not mentioning Tolkien all the time. He knows it would set him up for criticism like this. If he said, "Tolkien is one of my favorite authors and influenced me a lot," everyone would say, "well, you jerk, you shouldn't have stolen from him." Which I don't think he did.

I also don't think he should be critiqued like a 40 year old author with lots of experienced, that's just silly. He wrote the book when he was fifteen. Anyone who's conceited enough to claim that they could write better than him at age fifteen (clarification: none of you have said that, so this is not an attack) needs to think a little more. I am not saying he's a perfect author- it's just that the comparison is really irrelevant at his age and level. He didn't write the book for publication, either- he wrote it to see if he could write a novel. I'm not sure exactly what people mean when they say he needs "writing lessons"- his sentence structure is very good, he has impeccable grammar, there's nothing incorrect about his writing. I can name authors who have bad writing skills- Robert Jordan, for instance. Christopher on the other hand has good writing skills, he just doesn't have much experience.
He wrote the book for himself. I like him because he's a real person, not one of those authors that are full of their own accomplishments. He's a nerdy kid from the country that likes fantasy. I love watching videos of him speaking, because he's so normal. Not bigheaded and stuck up.

It does bother me that people are inclined to imply that they are 'better' than him in some way or another. I admire him for all the hurdles he jumped and hard work he did. And as a sixteen year old I can firmly say there's no way I could write a novel right now.

Anyway, back on track- I'm going to see Happy Feet today and hope the Eragon trailer is attached! I'd like to see it on something other than a grainy computer screen.

Oh yeah, I forgot he started writing the books when he was 15. Ha..I could never really do that. And I agree, I dont see anything wrong with his grammar and writing structure and such. He's given loads of details, and hey, thats why the books are so long too.

I've seen loads of Eragon commercial's now. :teehee:

The other day a friend asked me "have you seen the Eragon trailer yet?" and I was like "which one? I've seen TONS!"
