*comes back at the talk about whiskey*
St. Andrew's Day....? What is that? Similar to the Irish St. Patrick's Day perhaps? Shamrocks and beer? I have a friend who is in Scotland now, but unfortunately [s]they are not allowed for customs to bring home more than a bottle of rum[/s] she'll be returning on Thursday, so she'll miss the holiday...
Elanor... I was wondering whether you were Scottish or Aussie... but now it makes sense

O Flower of Scotland,
When will we see
Your like again,
That fought and died for,
Your wee bit Hill and Glen,
And stood against him,
Proud Edward's Army,
And sent him homeward,
Tae think again.
The Hills are bare now,
And Autumn leaves
lie thick and still,
O'er land that is lost now,
Which those so dearly held,
That stood against him,
Proud Edward's Army,
And sent him homeward,
Tae think again.
Those days are past now,
And in the past
they must remain,
But we can still rise now,
And be the nation again,
That stood against him,
Proud Edward's Army,
And sent him homeward,
Tae think again.
0 Flower of Scotland,
When will we see
your like again,
That fought and died for,
Your wee bit Hill and Glen,
And stood against him,
Proud Edward's Army,
And sent him homeward,
Tae think again.
*dabs eyes*

I love that... 'Tis beautiful.
On the lighter side...Have any of you read Robert Burns's 'Ode to Haggis' (Or 'To a Haggis')? It's HILARIOUS!
Fair fa' your honest, sonsie face,
Great chieftain o' the pudding-race!
Aboon them a' yet tak your place,
Painch, tripe, or thairm:
Weel are ye wordy o'a grace
As lang's my arm.
The groaning trencher there ye fill,
Your hurdies like a distant hill,
Your pin was help to mend a mill
In time o'need,
While thro' your pores the dews distil
Like amber bead.
His knife see rustic Labour dight,
An' cut you up wi' ready sleight,
Trenching your gushing entrails bright,
Like ony ditch;
And then, O what a glorious sight,
Warm-reekin', rich!
Then, horn for horn, they stretch an' strive:
Deil tak the hindmost! on they drive,
Till a' their weel-swall'd kytes belyve
Are bent like drums;
Then auld Guidman, maist like to rive,
Bethankit! hums.
Is there that owre his French ragout
Or olio that wad staw a sow,
Or fricassee wad make her spew
Wi' perfect sconner,
Looks down wi' sneering, scornfu' view
On sic a dinner?
Poor devil! see him owre his trash,
As feckles as wither'd rash,
His spindle shank, a guid whip-lash;
His nieve a nit;
Thro' blody flood or field to dash,
O how unfit!
But mark the Rustic, haggis-fed,
The trembling earth resounds his tread.
Clap in his walie nieve a blade,
He'll mak it whissle;
An' legs an' arms, an' hands will sned,
Like taps o' trissle.
Ye Pow'rs, wha mak mankind your care,
And dish them out their bill o' fare,
Auld Scotland wants nae skinking ware
That jaups in luggies;
But, if ye wish her gratefu' prayer
Gie her a haggis!

OH Haggis.
I was just going just post that, but I figured I'd better add more...
Haggis, I have such fond memories of Haggis...
Which for some reason brings me back to Robert Burn's Night and the bagpipe band and someone commenting that they had found a recipe for Vegetarian Haggis, which I thought was a bit on the silly side because haggis is well haggis...(Ha, that doesn't make much sense )

I love haggis. It's good as long as you don't think about what's in it.

Haha! Our pipe band plays at Burn's Night every year... and they have haggis.
We also have to provide one piper to play while they bring in the Haggis, "Piping in the Haggis", but that piper also has to drink a shot of wiskey.
One year, my friend who is ... er, now he's 18 but then he was 16... had to do it!! Don't worry, they didn't give him alchohol, they gave him water. Still, it was very funny.
Okay. "Oh Flower of Scotland" DRIVES ME NUTS!!!!
Hee hee...
Well, not the song exactly, because it's pretty, but once we were in massed bands and this lady was singing it, and she sang SO MANY VERSES and we all just had to stand there in our kilts and under the broiling sun and listen to it! If that hadn't happened I think I'd still like that song.
My sister and I have to play a gig today... in our uniforms.... red kilts and black vests... sigh.

Haggis makes me gag. I've never ever liked it, even before I knew what was in it. Same with black pudding.
I don't like whisky either...some Scot I am eh.

O!M!G!!! Don't even bring it near me! I REFUSE to even try haggis! This smell... look... contents... *barf* I am sure the vegetarian isn't much better and I won't get anywhere near that one either.
Whiskey... eh... whatever. I'm not much of a alcohol drinker except for fine wines.
Looovly songs, by de way...

PS: As for St. Andrew's Day being like St. Patricks, I do believe that is a yes.

Hehe, Haggis, I remember one year at Robert Burn's the bagpiper's gave me haggis and drenched it in whiskey because they thought it tasted better that way, personally, I'm not a big fan of Haggis, it has so much in it.... Of course, I can only bring myself to try it once a year...just for the holiday...
For some reason, the mention of Robert Burn's has caused me to get "The Black Bear" and "A Man's A Man For A' That" Stuck in my head, I'm tempted to start playing it but it's 12:30 at night, I don't think my neighbor's would appreciate it
Hehe, fine wines...yes...I agree...

Yer very welcome. I adore the song and much prefer it to Scotland the Brave.
There's nothing like a crowd of thousands at Scotland International football or Rugby matches singing that in unison. Awesome.
