Didn't you? I thought their Wickham was perfect. But I agree with you about Jane, she had the right personality but she needed to be prettier. That's what I liked about the 2005 version. Actually, in the 1995 version Jane was probably the only character that I thought could have been better. Mr and Mrs Bennet were both perfect, the sisters were perfect (I can't even remember what they looked like in the 2005 version), Bingley was perfect, Mr Collins was perfect...I want to watch it again, they were all so perfect!

I never got to finish the older version. We started it in class and never finished it because it was so long. And it was a year ago that I saw it so I don't really remember. I just saw the newer one and I'm quite content with the characters.

I revisited AU on Jan 14th after an almost 10-year break! The nostalgia..!

It has six episodes. It's five hours long and most of the dialogue is almost word for word from the book.

I have the BBC version in a two disc DVD set, each disk at about 2 1/2 hours long, making the whole thing about five hours. It's worth it though. greta movie. Like Firiel said, the script is almost word for word from the book.

I liked the BBC Wickham ok, but I thought he could have been a bit handsomer, and I thought he could have played the character a bit better. He wasn't bad at all though. The BBC version was, to quote Mary Poppins (even though I HATE that movie) "practically perfect in every way."

I think all the people in the BBC version are just... too old. I mean, Kitty and Lydia are supposed to be 15 and 17, and they look like they're 30 or something... I only watched the first episode of that one, and then I turned it off, cause I thought it was so bad in comparison to the 2005 version...

Okaaaay, Lydia might look a LITTLE old, I agree (cause I'm fifteen and I have WAY not got her figure) but in comparison to 2005 Lydia - WHAT 2005 Lydia? I can't even remember what she looks like, she was in the movie so little!

Good point Mel. I can't really remember any of the sisters except Lizzie and Jane. I barely remember Mr. and Mrs. Bennet. Admittedly, they do look a little old, but if they were older it had its benefits since they coudl act their parts so well.

I can't imagine not finishing the BBC version once I'd started it. I think it's better than the 2005 version. But to each his own I suppose.

All this makes me want to watch it again. If only I didn't have these dratted midterm exams to study for. Grrr.....

Lydia wasn't in that little! She was actually quite important...
As to the BBC version - as my sister says (and I quote):

Both her and I think that it's too... romantic... I mean, it is a romantic movie, but honestly, it shouldn't all be pink and fluffy and cute.

I really liked the BBC version, but personally I think that the 2005 version is better. I like the cinematography, acting, and people better. However, I loved how they were able to expand and develop the characters so much more in the BBC version.

I have to completely disagree with that.
The 2005 version makes it way too "pink and fluffy" there's not nearly as much Darcy/Lizzie tension as there is in the BBC version (which i do understand, considering the BBC version is so much longer and was able to expand more on that). The 2005 version was a lot easier, everything was smoother and they were a lot more attracted to eachother from the begininng than in the BBC version.
And if we're talking about too romantic, then how do you describe Mathew and Kiera kissing in the rain? I mean, come on: so not Lizzy/Darcy. If you want to go on the terms of mushy stuff, the 2005 version has a kiss in the rain, a whole little meeting in the sunrise, that ending scene with them randomly sitting on a table...the BBC version is nowhere near the level of gushyness the 2005 version has.
In the BBC version there is real tension between Darcy and Lizzie, that battle between them is fierce and even in the midst of thier romantic scenes the emotion is kept to a tense level, it's still the type of emotion that makes you go "awwww I think I'm going to cry" but on a heartwrenching level that's just beautiful.
The 2005 version is always just "aww...cute" and not nearly as (sorry for the overuse of this word) tense.
This is not a bash in any way, I enjoyed the 2005 version, but in my opinion it's much more "Walk on the clouds with me" than the BBC one.

Lizzy essentially hates Darcy at the beginning. In the 95/BBC/A&E version you see that--in the first proposal she's angry. They are NOT about to kiss. That is true to the book. The 2005 version is not authentic either to the period or to the book. Sorry, but if you want romance at the expense of the story the 2005 version is your best bet. I hate to be harsh and I don't want you to feel like I'm attacking you--you're certainly free to like the 2005 version--but your statement simply isn't correct, IMO.

It's like Firiel said, if you want a romance at the expense of the story, the 2005 version is it. We have to remember that P&P was a book first and that all these films only exist because of the book. The book is how it was supposed to be. The BBC version stays true to that. The 2005 version, while it has some sweet qualities to it and is not a bad film on its own, widely differs from the original story in a lot of ways that not only completely screw up the plot but are also wholly unnecessary. So, if I don't compare it to the book or the BBC version, I can like the 2005 version, but otherwise, it kind of annoys me.

I think what bothers people about the BBC version is that it's not "modern" enough. The romance between Lizzy and Darcy isn't a physical one, and people today just don't seem to get how you can have romance without being physical. I personally think there's a lot more beauty and romance in the looks that Lizzy and Darcy give each other in the BBC version than in any kiss in the rain in the 2005 version.
