I revisited AU on Jan 14th after an almost 10-year break! The nostalgia..!

I completely and utterly agree. That was one of my main points in my review of the new movie--in the book their romance is there but it is restrained. That doesn't mean it doesn't exist, as centuries of readers can attest--it simply means that they do not physically express their love in the way that the 2005 movie shows. That look they give each other and the way they move together is very understated in some ways but it is so much more sophisticated than the more physical romance in the 2005 version. Again, all of this IMO, and if you like the 2005 version better that is your right. But it isn't as accurate, either to the book or to the time period. (And the costumes! What on earth was going on with those???? Sorry, major pet peeve of mine. Caroline Bingley would never walk around in what amounts to a petticoat.)

I get that, too.
But I persoanlly think that's my favourite aspect about the BBC version. That thier love isin't physiacal, it's those looks (mainly from Colin-Darcy) that make me squeal, you can interpret them the way you want, you can draw conclusion, it's not just some half-put together chick flick love story!


OMYGOSH! The costume ticked me off...lol, I thought they were so off it was practically an injustice to P&P

Another thing that bothered me about the 2005 version: It's like the writers of the screenplay assumed that we were stupid. 1. They seemed to think that we couldn't understand that Darcy and Lizzy were in love if they weren't practically kissing. Apparently we're all too stupid to be able to interpret looks. 2. They changed the dialogue completely from the book. Do they really think that we have such puny minds that we can't comprehend Jane Austen's language? Admittedly, I was watching the BBC version with a friend a couple of years ago who didn't get it, so I paused the movie to explain some things every so often. But I think that a majority of us can understand it, and it would have made a lot of people (including me) happier if they would have included some of those classic lines from the book that I missed.

Sorry. Got carried away there. Rant over.

By the way Ms. Gamgee, I know exactly what you're talking about with Colin's Mr. Darcy looks. When they show his face when he's looking at Elizabeth turning pages for Georgiana, I think I completely melt.

As a sad testament to our world today, when I was watching the newer version of P&P with a friend, she still didn't understand what they were talking about, even when I also would pause and explain it. I've talked to several other people who felt the same way, and I just don't get it. I agree completely with you, TT, about the script... they simplified it to the point where I felt "stupid"- as you said. I was shocked that people even thought that, even with its simlification, was hard to comprehend.

That's one of the reasons I like the BBC version too- you can see so much from a simple look. Where as in the 05 version they overexaggerate things- it's too obvious, if that makes sense.

I can understand them simplifying the language for audiences today, I mean, in reality, the way Jane Austin wrote is not the way we speak today, although it bieng a period movie it might have been better to keep it like that, and though us die-hard P&P book fans love the simple wit and comic banter, the 2005 version, i think was meant to be a more modern version (this said, it doesn't mean I whole-heartedly approve of it.)

As for Darcy's look, the scene you just described is the exact one I was thinking! And when he watches her play piano *gaspswoon* my goodness, Colin Firth...GAH!

Colin Firth!!! After I first saw the BBC version, I went through a complete Colin Firth obsession phase. I read everything I could find on him, went to the fansites,etc. I could name every film he'd ever been in, where he went to school, actresses he'd dated. It was fun. It was kind of sad to find out that he's about as old as my Dad. But he's still incredibly swoonworthy. Especially as Mr. Darcy. There's just something about the way he wears those breeches...

Personally, I don't actively swoon over Colin Firth, but he's a way better Mr Darcy (IMO) than whatshisface who did Darcy in the 2005 version. He's very sweet, and I LOVE the way a lot of the time he just looks at Lizzie. Just looks. But you can tell he's completely and utterly smitten

I love Colin Firth as Mr. Darcy and in real life. That scene where he came out of the lake...... *faints* I also really liked him in the Importance of Being Earnest. Great movie. Copied pretty much word for word from the original play by Oscar Wilde. I loved it. It always leaves me with this insatiable desire for an English muffin.

JF! It's nice to have you! I'm sure it's quite alright if you join. Isn't the book just amazing? It's definitely my favorite Jane Austen novel so far. And.. you may like the 2005 version now, but I think you might like the BbC version even better if you get the chance to see it. You might even like Colin Firth a little more after seeing it.

Lady Earwen, do you mean a film of Pride and Prejudice or of another Jane Austen film? Looking up James McAvoy, I found out that he was Mr. Tumnus in the Chronicles of Narnia (loved him in the role by the way) which I adore, so I'd definitely like to see him doing Jane Austen.
