Maybe! I guess I'd assumed that all airbenders were monks, but that's sort of stupid.

It is possible that all airbenders were monks or priests ---- it would explain why they were so much in the minority and why they are now extinct. But, when Aang dies ---- will the line completely stop when it comes back to being reborn to airbending?

Well, I always thought there could be airbenders left somewhere and hiding. That maybe some of them escaped and have just been laying low for a while. They haven't really shown exactly what happened when the Air Temples were attacked, and who made it and who didn't. We just know they were attacked and are now deserted.

Hmmm so we haven't met any airbenders? Interesting.
I hope we meet some.....
Yet another question ----- in the episode "Appa's Lost Days" --- Appa goes to "Eastern Air Temple" as if he's "returning home" but the Guru said it was the Eastern Air Temple. I thought Aang came from the Southern Air Temple?

As I recall, when Aang was told he was the Avatar, he was sent to a different air temple for training. So that might account for the discrepancy.

So I'm assuming that Aang & Appa met before Aang found out he was Avatar. They say once you've chosen a flying bison, you're never parted----so Appa would've followed Aang, right ? So Aang's "home" would be the Southern Air Temple while Appa's is really farther back to the Eastern Air Temple.

I thought Aang was never sent to the Eastern Air Temple. I thought Gyatso told him that he would be moved to the Eastern Air Temple to finish his training and that's when he ran away.

So where on earth did this Eastern Air Temple come from? And why did Appa go there?

Well, he was in the Earth Kingdom "area" and that's the closest Air Temple around so I thought he just happened to find it. I think it's likely they would've visited the air temple before though. Again, I don't really know for sure, we could check some fansites or watch the episodes

You have to, Nie!!!! You'll be able soon! Think of only Wednesday!
Hmmm, that would make sense Eruadan. I try to understand these things --- I just hope that Mike and Brian don't make any mistakes in the story....it would really take away from the otherwise perfect cartoon series.

Well, no one has posted so....
I was watching all the episodes on TurboNick, stopping at Fortuneteller because they didn't have that episode...
I LOVED Blue Spirit and The Storm, brilliant, brilliant.
The moment where Katara tells Momo to get fill the waterskin was HILARIOUS.

The Storm made me tear up, sap that I am...
I noticed two things that I have questions about. In "The Spirit World," Aang mentions that Appa is his animal guide. Do we know anything about animal guides? Are they peculiar to Avatars, or do all benders or people have them?
Secondly, The Blue Spirit. I am sure I saw Zuko bend water/ice to shield himself from fire. How is that possible?!

Well as far as animal guides go, the only reference I can remember is that same one, Roku's dragon, which was Roku's animal guide. But I don't think anything else has been said about them, I don't even think any others have been revealed, not even Kyoshi's which is the only other known avatar with a given name.
Oh, I know what you mean Nie! It had me confuzzled for ages when I saw it the first time, which is why I was shocked to find out it was Zuko and not some other character. But if you looked closely (and here's where the geek part of me shines) he actually grabbed some sort of pitcher or threw it or something like that, and you see it fall on the floor about a second later. So yeah, it kinda looks like waterbending, I thought so too at first.

About the Animal Guides >> In the episode, "Appa's Lost Days" I do remember a flashback where Aang first met Appa and picked him as his animal guide HOWEVER other airbending children were also picking the puppy flying bisons as well..... I'm not sure if it's restricted to Avatars, or perhaps they wanted Aang to pick his animal guide in the pretense of just making a new friend and with the other children. This -was- before the monks told him that he was the Avatar.
Hmmm, I don't remember that --- I should watch Blue Spirit again.
EDIT: Watched the fight scenes in Blue Spirit and....
Okay, so.... the only times the Blue Spirit is getting fire .... fired at him is
1) on the swinging ladder with Aang, and they hopped off the ladder before they got burned onto the wall (they don't make it)
2) when they're surrounded at the wall and a few firebenders fire fire and Aang spins Zuko around and uses airbending to block the fire...

Thanks Dan, and Kit! I went back and watched The Blue Spirit again, and Dan was right. He grabs a vessel of some sort, it looked like a bucket, and throws water over the fire. Much to my disappointment. It was much more exciting when I thought he was waterbending.
And as to animal guides, I haven't seen Appa's lost days yet, so I'll have to watch it...
A question. Is the ability to bend something that is inherited? If a bender has a child, will that child by default be able to bend? What if a non-bender and a bender have a child?
And what if, say, a water and an air bender have a child? What will the child bend? (Let's pretend Katara and Aang get married.)
