yes, its true that evil characters aren't really good heroes. the only thing they want to accomplish is killing everyone.
Well, basically I just said that every character has a purpose and something they want. And I can't play a character if I don't "understand" their way of acting and their intentions, and then I can't think of them as evil...

Haha.  Um...I guess I go more for a High Fantasy style, as opposed to Sword-and-Sorcery (I think). Unfortunately, I haven't worked up the courage to risk ruining my idea for myself by starting to write the story out (I've got a lot of notes and stuff on it) and then messing it up. Which would take all of the fun out of it, instantly and permanently.
But I do have a very hard time not taking some of my characters that I've thought up for that and putting them in RPGs. They'd be really awesome in them, but I'm saving them.
Does anyone besides me have trouble trying to play a supposedly smart/philosophical/cunning character? I find it exceedingly difficult, so I avoid it if possible. I'm kind of hoping I'm not the only one, but I haven't noticed very many poorly-written smart/philosophical/cunning characters yet.

Owhh, I'd say you should try out your book characters on an RPG, I think it would give you some new knowledge and information about them, to see how they react and act in different situations. No?
What do you mean by "smart/philosophical/cunning" characters?
Would you like to play one, but are having troubles with the creating one?

I just posted a charrie in Artemis's "great ones" that's the closest I've gotten to blatant plagarism ... most likely because I'm short on time. Oh, well. Hail to unoriginality!

As I stated before, I find it tedious to play cunning, calculating characters like my mage figures. I have to think more on their actions and words, as they're supposed to be smarter than I am and intelligent enough not to get themselves in awkward situations.

What I meant was playing a character who's supposed to be smart/wise/philosophical/cunning(er) than you yourself are. LDM understood what I meant.
I could try them out, Ea, but then I wouldn't feel that they are as original of a character, designed for this specific world, and used in something else. I prefer to use my characters in only one setting, so I wouldn't want to use them in any random RPG on here and then go and put them in my story, if you know what I mean.

I really think you should try it, Aerandir, especially if your story's a fantasy setting. Just throw one of them into a flexible fantasy rpg. It not only adds dimension, but allows you insight into what your character would do in impromptu situations. The best characters in my story are the ones I've created/developed in rping.

I see what you mean Aerandir, but I agree with LDM. Playing your characters in a RPG would force you to have them deal with situations that you might not have cme up with yourself, and it will add more layers to your characters. Don't be mom-ish and overprotective, I know it's difficult because they are your crations and you don't want them to be eaten by a dragon out there in the big world, but they'll do fine, don't worry
Concerning the 'smarter-than-you-are-characters. I don't think it's possible to do that. Even if you try, it will still be you writing out their actions and thoughts. You can make a character that would think more about certain things or one that would be meaner than you would ever appear in rl, but you will still be the creative factor, so the character will be your creation, if that makes sense.
It's like serious sword fighting, we all RP about it, but how many would actually know how to do it...

Note on the bolded text: In this particular instance, it'd be more appropriate to say fatherly.
Maybe I'll slip my favorite character into an RPG, with some alterations (for instance, he would have to have a slightly different occupation), if the right RPG comes up. So far, he would've only been good in a few, and they didn't last.

Agreed, I think currently the best example I can give is Edwin... hah, the character has a dilemma kinda as he has bonded with his companion yet cannot trust her because he is afraid of being betrayed again. But still he follows, I like the contreversy of the situation and how I can take it anyway I want to.
The options where you can go with your character are the best all tough you kinda have to follow the basic outline you have made for the character in the profile. Big changes can come over a longer period = development

Aerandir, mom-ish is the fitting word... but for you, I'll accept fatherly...
You could also try out one of your minor characters first, if you feel uncofortable about 'ruining' your main character

I know how you feel, being cautious about using your character, though, Aerandir. It's happened to me a couple times with various RP characters, where I've liked one I've created so much that I'm afraid to use it again. I don't know, maybe I think subconsciously that I won't stay true to the character or something. Anyway, my fears proved unfounded the few times I tried to use the character again

Ok, let me try to show my more understandng side as well.... My main character is the closest thing you get to a rl-me in a fantasy-setting. Therefore she's got no extraordinary magical talents, no superior, over-average skills with weapons or in healing, and she is flawed, like me. But it always make me a bit protective when RPing... I get reluctant to get into battles and get hurt or get myself into too ackward situations... and it can easily end up in boring play-it-safe RP's, but it can also be a good challenge, because it gets closer to rl issues... just adopted to a RP setting!
I know it's not the same as with your dilemma of using your book characters or not, but... just to show that I have err... sorta mom-ish concerns as well!!

My favorite characters usually end up being a more cynical and skilled extension of myself or the rolemodel I've always wanted to be. I understand what you mean by mom-ish. There are a few characters I would choose above others, but there's never any dislike there. I love all my characters, flaws and everything else they happen to come with.
And Curunir, concerning the DL rpg, I was thinking either they're partially enslaved by the current guardian of the tower and sent on a quest, or they find a device of time journeying and get current with the Legends setting. The time journeying one sounds the most promising to me, but we'll have difficulties making it original as we happen to use that in Star Crystal as well.

Time travel is one of those things that just can't help being interesting, though
Question for you all: what do you think makes a good character? I've been pondering it lately. Seems to me it's increasingly hard to come up with an interesting, original character, what with circumventing the dreaded Mary-Sue and whatnot
