I was sort of wonder ing the same thing. Do you have to have a special gift to bend, or is it somthing that every one can learn?
About Aang's arrow's: I remember hearing in the ep. "storm" that those were airbending tatoos, so I think its somthing only airbenders have.

I had the distinct impression that the ability to bend is completely at random. BUT, let's discuss this...
There was no mention that Katara's mother was a waterbender, and her father is not a waterbender.
Toph. Her high-ranking family does not prominant for any bending, but she's an earthbender.
The case of the royal family of the Fire Nation is interesting. We know Fire Lord Ozai is a firebender and Fire Lord Azulon was also an firebender. Ursa is not a firebender but Zuko and Azula both turned out as firebenders. Now, Iroh we know is a firebender but I had the distinct impression that his son who died in the Battle of Ba Sing Se was not a fire bender.
I believe the ability to bend is similar to whether or not you have brown eyes or green eyes if one of your parents has green eyes and another has brown eyes.
It's the recessive/dominant trait of those features.
Brown eyes is a dominant trait over green eyes, which is a recessive trait. Generally, the chldren of these parents would have 50-75% of having brown eyes instead of green eyes.
Now to look at this by bending....
Let's say firebending and airbending are dominant traits while earthbending and waterbending are recessive traits. Let's follow Nie's hypothetical situation that Aang and Katara gets married, and have a kid. If I'm assuming correctly that airbending is a dominant trait, then the child would become a airbender.
If you have a bender and a non-bender have a kid, I think the bending trait would be more dominant, depending on how pure-blooded he is from whether or not he have bending blood from his ancestors.
You have two dominant or two recessive trait-holding benders. Air & Fire. Water & Earth. When the traits are equal, it's really up to the Spirits to determine it.
..... I am SO going pre-med.
Aang's Arrow insignias: Yeah. In the Storm---the fisherman says they're airbending tattoos but the other airbenders at the Southern Air Temple did not have tattoos.
Now the higher monks did have tattoos and as I stress ---- it could be a monk thing, it could be not . It's hard to determine.

Since we were talking about animals, it's clear that not a single creature in the Avatar universe is something from our world, meaning every animal is a cross with something else. I just remembered when they were talking about the crazy things the Earth king did, and his pet came up. It was hilarious how everyone thought he was demented because his pet was just an ordinary bear.
As far as bending goes I think there is no definitive way of this going even by genetics. Remember the twin boys in "The Fortuneteller"??? They seemed identical and one was a bender, the other wasn't. When they can explain that I'm ready to hear it I think that there is simply something spiritual as to who is a bender and who isn't. So far there has been no strict pattern that we can follow, although the dominant/recessive theory is interesting.
I remember what the Guru said, as to how all the elements are spiritually one, which is probably why the Avatar can master all of them, considering how the Avatar is the link to the Spirit world and so on and so forth. No idea though. THoughts??
It's fun how 3 mods have been running this thread so long. I think we're intimidating members

I don't know if I trust any of those people in the town of Aunt Wu. Those twins can say all they want --- which is what they might just be doing --- saying it. I didn't see either of them bend so I don't know about them.
I haven't seen all of book 2 yet. I've only today finished watching the last of book 1. There is a lot of things that are spiritual in the Avatar world----though if the ability to bend depends on how spiritual someone is why wasn't Yue a bender since she had a piece of the Moon spirit in her?
Well, it's not our fault us mods know Avatar is cool --- join the club guys! Avatar is NOT kid's show if that's what you guys are thinking.

I'm pretty sure I saw one of the twins Earthbending when they were digging trenches to redirect the lava.
I'm leaning toward thinking that bending is a spiritually bestowed gift. The world of Avatar doesn't seem to be like the world of Harry Potter, in that people who can't bend aren't thought of as less capable or anything like that- I mean, look at Sokka. Toph teases him, but he's got a lot of brains and physical ability.
Perhaps it's simply something that some people are granted and some people aren't. The spirits, fates, whatever it is that controls the world, know who will need it and who will not, and who will use it well.
But then, there's an awful lot of people who are granted it and don't use it well..

Ahhhh [goes to rewatch]
It could be that really, it's just completely at random.
I don't quite buy the theory that they get the ability by how spiritually connected they are with the Spirits...

Mm. We'd really need to know more about the world to understand it.
I just finished watching the Book One finale. I'm in awe. Very, very good. The best episodes of the first season, I think.
It was very dark! I don't think that the intenseness could be lost on anyone in this episode, unlike some of the others. The moon going out, the face stealer, really serious stuff.

Rad and I were watching the episode where Aang and company visit Avatar Roku's temple in the Fire Nation. Remember when Roku emerges through Aang towards the end and demolishes the temple? The first thing he does is send a fire blast through the whole room- burning/knocking over the Fire Nation soldiers, but only melting the chains around Katara and Sokka. I found it mildly interesting that he also melts the chains around Zuko, who is tied by himself to a post, without hurting him. Maybe Roku knew that Zuko's heart wasn't really in all this murdering business?
Or maybe I'm just reading into it. Who knows.
I want to learn more about this spirit world venture Iroh has mentioned once or twice. We know he could see, or at least sense, Aang when he went with Avatar Roku's dragon into the spirit world, but not much beyond that. Has potential to be very interesting.

I agree. I just watched that episode to, and now that you mention it, I am intrigued as to how Zuko got out. Beneath that Emo-boy exterior is a heart of gold. (He's my emo-boy )

Lol! Don't let Nie hear you say that --- she's convinced that Zuko's not emo. Just confused.
Avatar Roku's a very interesting figure and I still want to know exactly why or HOW he disappeared just at the time the Fire Nation attacked.
Now was it clear as to whether or not Avatar Roku disappeared the same day the Fire Nation attacked (Sozun's comet) or after he knew about the Fire Nation attacking?
I don't know about the theory of not hurting Zuko, Nie ---- I didn't pay that close attention to it when I watched it too but it could be sheer luck that Zuko was not hurt.

Could it possibly be that he just has really quick reflexes? We saw that Iroh was able to heat up his shackles (the whole story about him getting captured naked was halarious) Perhaps While the others were distracted with Roku Zoku managed to escape.

Zoku --- that's brilliant, I never realized that. Roku and Zuko has three letters in common... Perhaps, when the time came, Zuko will get an interesting message from Avatar Roku/Aang about his position in the war.
