Yay! I'm glad you had such a wonderful time. If only I had the time to go on holiday right now.. *sigh*

Anyhoo, that's okay. Maybe it'd be better if we started this next weekend.. oh wait, that's my birthday. What about on Friday? I guess you don't necessarily need the books as I'll provide background info and quotes to lead the discussions. I think you'll be able to join in more often than you think.

Now all I've got to do is rope JF in. She's been ignoring this thread and awful lot..

Time is something you take... otherwise you'll never get it ;-)

And I think you should just post the discussion topic whenever you have it ready. We'll get back here when we can and reply to it.
And as I said, I'll fake the discussions to my best ability!! :P

I would be roping in the JF if only I could find the WT thread... It disappeared when I tried to post there, so let me reply to you here.
(*prods Larael to see if she'll float in the air*
All balloony you say... yeah, I love that feeling... It wasn't quite that feeling I had today, it was more of the safe, content... I just like the now that I live in...! f that makes sense...

Hmm who are you marrying, Larael? Something tells me you put it in your sig sometime ago...)

Alright done... :-)

Okie dokies.. that sounds fine to me. I may be able to get something up toward the end of the week. :)

*ish prodded* Heh, thanks. :P Nah, it makes complete sense. Days like that are the best. It's the best kind of feeling when you're content with your life.

Welll.. I "eloped" with Severus Snape back in July or August, and only afterward did I realise I wanted a wedding. So, I'm still trying to work that out.

Lol. Maybe that's why he and Lily were never really "meant to be" ya know? He definitely doesn't strike me as the type to settle down and raise the kids or something. :P

Has there ever been a point in your life when you have an idea or a thought that no matter what anyone says or tries to tell you about it, you hold onto it for dear life?

You normally consider yourself a person who is capable of holding a pleasant conversation, and listening to both sides of the argument, but when this is mentioned, all that goes out of the window, and you just want to rant and rant?

Well, I am afraid m'dears, this is me with Snape, and in fact all of Deathly Hallows. I just can't seem to be able to come into this thread and the DH spoiler thread, without something welling up inside me that wants me to post my true feelings no matter what the cost.

It's childish, it's stupid, and I'd like to think tha other people would agree with me, when I say, this is unlike me.

Perhaps this is what happens when you have loved a character for as long as I have, and created so many stories concerning this character that not only do your yourself deny what the author has written, but you get really irritated when no-one else shares your opinion. And that's not right to feel like that.

So I really think the only thing to be done, is for me to leave the HP threads, that concern aspects that I don't like (I can't believe I'm writing this). Because I just know, one day, something will be posted that I can't hold back on, I won't be able to just smile and say "I disagree". And I really don't want it to come to that.

Fiery temper + outspoken + things-I-disagree-on-concerning-some-I-Love = badness

So I apologize for no longer continuing with this thread (or at least I get some sense knocked into me) and once again, I know it's sounds stupid... but then I can be very stupid sometimes.... so please forgive my stupidity....

:bye2:

No, no, it's not stupid or childish, JF! You have every right to hold on to your own ideas and thoughts, and we should respect that. I'm sorry you feel that you can't discuss Snape with us. Actually, you're one of the people I was looking forward to discussing him with. However, if you think that this will benefit us all then I have no other choice but to agree.

Although.. we're about to start a discussion on Snape in previous books, besides DH. Do you think you could discuss those with us? I've tried very hard not to make any of the discussions DH centred... *puppy dog eyes* Then of course you're free to leave again when we begin discussion on DH. What say you? *clings desperately onto JF's legs*

Thank you for being understanding. I was worried actually what you and the others might say, but I was stupid to worry.

 Believe me it will benefit everyone, you see as I can't possibly express my dislike for the whole Snape/Lily thing without upsetting you and all the other fans. And as that relationship plays such a big part in DH, I can't stay around while it's being discussed.

Just imagine if you didn't like the character of Elizabeth, yet you loved Will, but you couldn't stand them being together? Can you imagine going into the DMC or AWE threads where some or nearly all the talk, centred around them together? That's the only thing, that I think most of us know, that I could compare it to really.

Yes, I shall do my best to be there. Thursday I believe. I have all the HP books, so it shouldn't be a problem. :-)

No, not stupid, just a bit silly is all. I was that way myself not too long ago. ;)

I believe you then. :) I'd rather us have peaceful discussions on the previous books rather than an all out war over just the one. I'm so glad you're going to join us for the first few books at least. Thursday it is then.

*happy dance*

Believe it or not i used to HATE Elizabeth just like you said.^^ But by the second movie i've grown to accept her (I'm not saying you have to accept Lily/Snape but thats just what happened to me...^^) By all means state your iedas and beliefs but yet shed mercy on us if you think they're too strong. <3 Because we luff you JFish! <3 (Even if you doooo steal all the good Snape banners in the Request section.... :p ) Hehe... <3

One more day guys! *Note* I'll add my two cents on Friday b/c i wont have time thursday...^^

I know, I know, it's already Friday [for us Brits anyway!], but I promise you I'll get our discussion going within the next hour. Just check back at this post because it will be the one I update. :)

EDIT:

Philosopher's Stone - Chapter 7: The Sorting Hat

Harry's first glimpse of Snape -

Quote:
"The hook-nosed teacher looked past Quirrell's turban straight into Harry's eyes - and a sharp, hot pain shot across the scar on Harry's forehead."

The first description of Snape -

Quote:
". . . greasy black hair, a hooked nose, and sallow skin."

Harry's first impression of Snape -

Quote:
"Harder to shake off was the feeling Harry had gotten from the teacher's look - a feeling that he didn't like Harry at all."

Other info:
- he teaches Potions
- wants to teach Defense Against the Dark Arts
- knows a lot about the Dark Arts

Discussion Topic/Questions:
1) What was your first impression of Snape's character?
2) Did anything about his description - both physical and those concerning his personality - catch your eye? If so, what?

Larael's response --
1) My first impression of Snape's character was that there was obviously more to him. This one glimpse at the opening feast and maybe later in his classroom wouldn't be the only part we see him play. At this point, the fact that Harry's scar hurt at the exact same time as when Snape looked at Harry, I think it is safe to assume that his character may not be entirely good, as we assume teachers are.
2) Right now, physical appearance sticks out to me the most. The "greasy hair" and "sallow skin" definitely show signs of possible sickliness and lack of hygeine. Could this also propose that Snape is a weak character on the outside?

Any other questions/comments?

Preview for next discussion - Philosopher's Stone - Chapter 8: The Potion's Master [I promise there will be a load more cool things to discuss for this one. :)]

*Nodnod* Okay, Larel! <3

EDIT:1) He catches my eye in the book because he actually picks Harry out of the croud of children and, if I'm correct, Harry and Snape have yet to meet eachother. I add that because Hagrid waves to Harry and whatnot but they know eachother. Snape finds Harry especially intresting, or something else.
I also thought that Snape had some depth to him because of this, for some reason i could see his gaze/glare meaning something later in the book/s.

2) I also noticed his greasy hair and his sallow skin, and wondered if he was ill. Other than that i just thought that he was a strange teacher with some ugly parents. (JUST KIDDING! lol! *Huggles Snape*)

It isn't much I can add to the discussion since you've alredy said what there is to be said!

Obviously Rowling doesn't give a very nice first impression. It's clear that there is something about Snape... as I remember the feast it is all very happy and exciting for Harry (and for the readers) but then the introduction of Snape casts a shadow over the happiness. And as Larael said, the reader is very likely to connect the pain in Harry's Scar to Snape rather than to Quirrell at this point, which I'm sure she does very intentionelly!
However, I didn't pay special attention to the fact that Snape singles out Harry in the crowd of students because after all Harry has the scar and he is well known in the Wizard world, but it's definitely another hint that Snape might have a special interest in Harry - for good or for bad.
So all in all, a quite negative first impresion of Snape supported by the unattractive physical description Rowling gives of Snape.
